The Mets issued a statement to that effect Friday before the Mets played the Cubs in the first game of a three-game series at Wrigley Field and after a newspaper reported the possibility. The club's statement did not address another aspect of the report in the New York Daily News that said Reyes' right hamstring tendon is ruptured, not merely torn as the Mets have maintained. Indeed, the club's media notes for the Friday game listed Reyes' injury as "tendinitis behind his right calf," a confusing diagnosis and one that is inconsistent with a diagnosis the club announced weeks after Reyes removed himself from the Mets game' in Los Angeles on May 20. The second diagnosis was that of a partial tear of the hamstring. The statement issued Friday said: "Jose Reyes continues to receive physical therapy for a torn hamstring tendon behind the right knee. Should he not respond to physical therapy, surgery is an option." While it was already highly unlikely that Reyes was going to return for the stretch run -- given the Mets' myriad injuries -- this statement pretty much ensures the end of the 2009 campaign for one of the game's most dynamic talents.

According to the New York Daily News, Mets' shortstop Jose Reyes has a completely torn hamstring and he may need surgery to repair the injury. Reyes has been out of the lineup since May 20 with various injuries.

Our View: Reyes has been sidelined for most of the season, and he may be the poster-boy of the 2009 New York Mets. We heard several times that he was close to returning, but he would eventually suffer another setback every time and remain on the bench. He is still getting treatment, so we will keep you updated on his status and if surgery is necessary.

Admitting what has seemed obvious for some time now, Mets manager Jerry Manuel has said that he does not expect Jose Reyes (leg) to play again this season, according to SNY.

Our View: Though apparently many inside the organization believe Reyes' delayed return is more about what is going on inside his head than with his legs. He is apparently gun-shy about getting re-injured and taking things mind-bogglingly slow with his rehab. At this point, that's probably a good course of action. He should return to elite status at short in 2010.

An MRI on Wednesday revealed that superstar shortstop Jose Reyes has "significant" scar tissue and inflammation behind his right knee, according to MLB.com's Noah Coslov.

Our View: Reyes will now stay in New York for his rehab. If the Mets don't just shut him down for the season soon it will be both mystifying and unhelpful for your team, as he doesn't figure to play too great after missing so much time and dealing with so many injuries. Put your Jose Reyes eggs in a 2010 basket.

Reyes, who has not played a game for the Mets since May 20, was scheduled to be examined by doctors at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York on Tuesday. Reyes had been making progress in his rehabilitation from a slight tear in his hamstring before July 31, when he did not run the bases in Port St. Lucie, Fla., as scheduled. Mets manager Jerry Manuel called it a setback at the time. At this point, with fewer than 60 games remaining on the Mets' schedule, the possibility exists that Reyes could miss the remainder of the season. Jose Reyes (hamstring) is walking freely without crutches. "He’s not 100%, obviously, at this point, but he looks great," said his agent Chris Leible. Reyes underwent surgery to repair a torn right hamstring tendon in October. Barring any unforeseen setbacks, the 26-year-old shortstop is expected to be fully recovered in time for the start of the spring training.
