Collin Balester, Jordan Zimmermann and Terrell Young each pitched

Source (CBSSports.com) (SP - was) | 0 comments.

News: Collin Balester, Jordan Zimmermann and Terrell Young each pitched two scoreless innings and the Nationals beat the Tigers 2-1 Thursday. The 22-year-old Balester is the only of the trio with major league experience, having started 15 games for the Nationals last year. He and Zimmermann are vying for spots in the rotation and Young is a Rule 5 draft pick who must either make the team out of camp or be offered back to the Reds. "I tried to be as calm as possible and not get too worked up, and I think that helps me," the 22-year-old Zimmermann said. "I wasn't nervous at all. I just got up there and did my thing." [...]

Jordan Zimmermann retired all six Tigers he faced, striking

Source (fantrax.com) (SP - was) | 0 comments.

Jordan Zimmermann retired all six Tigers he faced, striking out three of them, in the Nationals' 2-1 win on Thursday. Zimmermann pitched the third and fourth innings after Collin Balester threw a pair of hitless frames to start the game. Balester is probably the top candidate to be the Nationals' fifth starter, but Zimmermann is very much in the running and might have the most fantasy upside of any of the team's rotation options. There could be room for both if Shawn Hill or another starter goes down this spring.

Nationals transferred RHP Jordan Zimmermann to the 60-day disabled list. Zimmermann underwent Tommy John surgery in mid-August and is likely to miss the entire 2010 season. The transaction cleared 40-man roster space for Pete Orr, who will add depth to Washington's infield.
