Smoltz sloppy in Cincinnati
John Smoltz had his worst night as a Cardinal on Wednesday, allowing six runs while walking five in just four innings, as St. Louis lost 6-1 in Cincinnati.
Our View: It was the first time he had pitched fewer than five innings, or allowed more than four runs, in seven starts with the Cardinals.

Smoltz solid in Houston, still loses
John Smoltz was effective again on Wednesday night, allowing just two runs in six innings while striking out five, but still fell to 1-2 as a Cardinal, as St Louis lost 3-0 in Houston.
Our View: His Cardinals ERA still remains a tidy 3.18 through 33 innings, however.
Smoltz a tough-luck loser Wed.
News: St. Louis SP John Smoltz pitched a pretty solid ballgame on Wednesday against the Astros. His team just didn't score any runs. Smoltz gave up two runs on five hits over six innings but lost to fall to 3-7 on the year. He did not walk a batter and had five strikeouts. His ERA is 5.96. [...]

Tough luck on the decision, but Smoltzie's stuff -- as it has
Tough luck on the decision, but Smoltzie's stuff -- as it has since he joined the Cardinals -- was very impressive in this one. Despite an unimpressive 1-2 record, Smoltz has a 3.18 ERA and an eye-popping 37/4 K/BB ratio in 34 innings with St. Louis. After bombing out with Boston, Smoltz has re-emerged as a solid back-of-the-rotation option in all fantasy formats. His next start will come on Sept. 30, in Cincinnati.
Braves | Cox's relationship with GM questioned
Yahoo! Sports' Gordon Edes reports Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox and general manager Frank Wren had a falling out in spring training that led Cox to the point that he packed his bag and climbed into his car to drive home from spring training until talked out of it by one of his coaches. Cox was unhappy with the way the team handled the departures of SP John Smoltz and SP Tom Glavine, according to a source.
Lohse has chance to earn playoff spot
ESPN.com is reporting that Cardinals' starter Kyle Lohse has three more starts to prove he is capable of remaining in the rotation for the postseason. Lohse ha struggled with injury this season and has a 5-8 record.
Our View: It looks to be too little, too late for Lohse in 2009. With John Smoltz as an option as a fourth starter, Lohse is going to have to be very good over his next three starts to earn his job. The way he has pitched this season, don't expect that too happen.
Cardinals | Smoltz hurls quality start Friday
St. Louis Cardinals SP John Smoltz allowed two runs and six hits over six innings Friday, Sept. 18, against the Chicago Cubs, according to The Associated Press. He walked three and struck out four, but ended up with a no-decision.
Smoltz returns with quality start
News: Cardinals SP John Smoltz, who hadn't pitched since Sept. 8 because of tendinitis and inflammation in his right shoulder, returned to the mound Friday against the Cubs and recorded his first quality start in three starts, allowing two runs on six hits in six innings. He also had three walks and four strikeouts, but he ended up with the no-decision. [...]

John Smoltz allowed two runs over six innings against the Cubs
John Smoltz allowed two runs over six innings against the Cubs on Friday, but was handed a no-decision in an eventual 3-2 win. Smoltz skipped his Monday start due to right shoulder tendinitis, but in spite of a shaky start, he looked pretty solid against the Cubs on Friday, throwing a season-high 108 pitches. [...]
Smoltz fares well at Busch
John Smoltz only issued two earned runs on six hits over six innings in Friday's 3-2 win over the Cubs at Busch Stadium. He had three walks with four strikeouts.
Our View: The game was tied at 2-2 when Smoltz exited, so he unfortunately takes a no-decision rather than a win for his solid performance. He bounced back after allowing seven earned runs over his previous two starts this month.

Smoltz to start Friday
According to the Twitter page of MLB.com's B.J. Rains, the Cardinals will start pitcher John Smoltz on Friday. Smoltz missed his scheduled start on Monday with shoulder tendinitis.
Our View: It was originally believed that Smoltz wouldn't go until Sunday, so it is encouraging that he will pitch sooner than that. This injury doesn't appear to be anything to be concerned about, but Smoltz is 42 years old, so he is more susceptible to injury.
Cardinals | Smoltz to throw bullpen Tuesday
The Associated Press reports St. Louis Cardinals SP John Smoltz (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Sept. 15, and could start against the Chicago Cubs Sunday, Sept. 20. Manager Tony La Russa said the team has not decided if they will use Smoltz as a starter or setup man in the playoffs.
Smoltz might make start Saturday
News: From The Sports Xchange: Kyle Lohse, who has had an assortment of injuries and also has had to deal with a family tragedy, has had renewed problems with his right forearm. Lohse, who had trouble finding a consistent release point on Saturday when he was cuffed around in his first start in three weeks, had an MRI Monday and some minor inflammation was found. Lohse was slated to pitch this weekend against the Cubs but probably will be skipped, with both Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright likely to face Chicago along with John Smoltz, who reported improvement in his right shoulder. Smoltz, who was skipped Monday because of recent tendinitis in the shoulder, said before the Cardinals beat Florida, "To beat a dead horse, I could have pitched today. (The shoulder) is progressing the way I thought two days ago I told you it would progress." [...]
Wellemeyer roughed up at Busch
Todd Wellemeyer was roughed up for six earned runs on nine hits over four innings in Monday's 11-6 win over the Marlins at Busch Stadium. He had one walk with three strikeouts.
Our View: Wellemeyer struggled tonight, but the Cardinals scored enough runs for him to end the night with a no-decision. He was making a spot-start in place of John Smoltz (shoulder tendinitis).
Lohse, who was touched for seven hits and four earned in 3 1/3
Lohse, who was touched for seven hits and four earned in 3 1/3 frames in his last start, said he was still planning on starting this weekend, but that appears unlikely with the news that Smoltz is ready to return to the rotation. Smoltz, who missed Monday's start against Florida with tendinitis in his right shoulder, played catch on Monday and will throw a bullpen on either Tuesday or Wednesday. In four starts with the Redbirds, Smoltz is 1-1 with a 3.27 ERA.
Smoltz misses Monday's start
John Smoltz missed Monday's start against Florida due to shoulder tendinitis, according to the Associated Press.
Our View: The 42-year-old vet feels good enough to pitch, but was scratched as a precaution. Todd Wellemeyer started in his place tonight. Smoltz believes he will be ready to take the hill Sunday against the Cubs, but skipper Tony LaRussa did not set the rotation beyond their series with the Marlins.
Smoltz reports improvement in shoulder
News: According to MLB.com, John Smoltz reported big improvement in his right shoulder Sunday, and he expects to throw a side session this week before starting Sept. 20 against the Cubs. Smoltz, who will miss his scheduled start on Monday because of tendinitis and inflammation in his right shoulder, said Saturday he probably wouldn't throw much before taking the mound against the Cubs. "My routine in situations like this is two, three, four days, and I will be back out playing catch and throwing," Smoltz said. "I can pitch through it. Tendinitis, in most cases, you warm up and get through the rough point and you don't miss a beat. But you know that it will take more and more of that and get harder and harder to get loose." [...]
Cardinals | Smoltz feeling better
Updating previous reports, MLB.com's B.J. Rains reports St. Louis Cardinals SP John Smoltz (shoulder) said he felt improvement in his right shoulder Sunday, Sept. 13, and expects to throw a side session in the next couple of days.
Smoltz feeling much better
MLB.com is reporting that Cardinals' starter John Smoltz is feeling much better and could throw a side session soon. Smoltz was scratched from his next start with shoulder tendinitis.
Our View: Smoltz was hoping to only miss one start, and it looks like that will be the case. He should throw a side session soon, and he could start later this week.

Cardinals | Wellemeyer to start Monday
The Associated Press reports that St. Louis Cardinals P Todd Wellemeyer (7-9, 5.62 ERA) will make a spot start Monday, Sept. 14, against the Florida Marlins, in place of SP John Smoltz (tendinitis). It is Wellemeyer's first start since July 26.
Cardinals | Smoltz to miss next start with tendinitis
The Associated Press reports that St. Louis Cardinals SP John Smoltz (tendinitis) will miss his start Monday, Sept. 14, against the Florida Marlins, because of shoulder tendinitis. Smoltz said he expects to miss only one start, and added that he could pitch if this was the postseason. His next scheduled start is Sunday, Sept. 20, against the Chicago Cubs.
Cardinals' Smoltz to miss next start
Cardinals right-hander John Smoltz is being held out of his scheduled start Monday against the Florida Marlins because of shoulder tendinitis.Smoltz, 1-1 with a 3.27 ERA in four starts with St. Louis after being released by the Boston Red Sox, said Saturday he expects to miss only one start. His next scheduled outing is Sept. 20 against the Chicago Cubs. While Smoltz will not throw again until then, he indicated he could pitch now if this was the postseason.
Smoltz to miss next start
News: Cardinals right-hander John Smoltz is being held out of his scheduled start Monday against the Florida Marlins because of shoulder tendinitis. "As I've said many times before, if it was the playoffs starting, I'm sure I could have cranked it up," Smoltz said. "Like any tendinitis, once you get heated, you're fine." Cardinals manager Tony La Russa says Todd Wellemeyer will start Monday for the first time since July 26. [...]

Smoltz downplayed the issue, but he was still appreciative of the chance to get the needed rest. He received a shot of anti-inflammatory medicine to ease the pain he was feeling, and he will not throw a bullpen session between now and when he makes his next start. "At this point, the easy thing to do is give me rest and I'll be ready," Smoltz said. "I'll be fine. I've pitched through all kinds of tendinitis before. But at this point, it gives me a nice opportunity to give me five days off and feel good about my next start." Todd Wellemeyer will pitch in Smoltz's place on Monday.

Smoltz scratched from next start with tendinitis
John Smoltz has been scratched from Monday's start with a minor case of shoulder teninitis, according to the Twitter page of beat writer Matthew Leach. Smoltz is only expected to miss one start, and he will be replaced by Todd Wellemeyer on Monday.
Our View: This doesn't sound like anything to be worried about, but any injury to Smoltz has to be a concern. He is expected to make his next start, but don't be shocked if the team starts to transition him to the bullpen.

Smoltz Ks seven in no decision
News: Cardinals SP John Smoltz allowed three runs and six hits in five innings during a no decision Tuesday against the Brewers. Smoltz actually trailed 3-0 before Milwaukee rallied for the 4-3 win. Smoltz didn't issue a walk and allowed a two-run homer to Prince Fielder in the first. He also struck out seven. [...]

Smoltz certainly pitched well enough to win this one, but the Cardinals waited until the ninth inning to their damage. Regardless, it was another fine outing for the elder statesman, as he issued no walks for the second straight start and made only one mistake all night, which was deposited into the stands for a two-run jack by Prince Fielder. In four outings for the Redbirds, Smoltz has compiled a 3.27 ERA and sensational 28/1 K/BB ratio over 22 frames. Owners shouldn’t hesitate to give him the nod with confidence when he toes the rubber again on Sept. 14 vs. the Marlins.
Smoltz settles down, takes ND
John Smoltz allowed three runs in a rocky first two innings on Tuesday night, but settled down, allowing zero in the next three frames, taking a no-decision as the Cardinals rallied for a 4-3 win in Milwaukee.
Our View: He also struck out seven, bringing his total to an impressive 28 in his first 22 innings in St. Louis.

Smoltz to stay in rotation
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Cardinals' pitcher John Smoltz will remain in the rotation for the rest of the regular season. With the return of Kyle Lohse, the team will move Mitchell Boggs to the bullpen.
Our View: The Cards haven't decided what role Smoltz will fill in the postseason, but it will probably depend on how Lohse performs for the rest of the month. If the team feels comfortable with Lohse in the rotation, Smoltz will probably move to the bullpen and take over as the setup man. If not, Smoltz could be the team's fourth starter in the playoffs. Regardless, Smoltz looks like a pretty solid fantasy play over the final month of the season.
Cardinals | Boggs out of rotation
Matthew Leach, of MLB.com, reports St. Louis Cardinals SP Mitchell Boggs will not remain in the starting rotation for the final four weeks of the season. However, SPs Kyle Lohse and John Smoltz will remain in the rotation. Lohse is scheduled to return to the rotation against the Atlanta Braves Saturday, Sept. 12. Smoltz will make at least one more start, but it sounds like his place as a starter is open ended. Manager Tony La Russa said he would have no problem using Smoltz as a reliever in the playoffs.

John Smoltz
From goat back to great, thus is the story of John Smoltz circa 2009. Anyone that had Smoltz on their team for his work in Boston would tell you the 42-year-old pitcher was just awful after he compiled a 2-5 record, 8.32 ERA and 1.70 WHIP. I myself was suckered ...
Cardinals | Smoltz hit with loss Thursday
The Associated Press reports St. Louis Cardinals SP John Smoltz (1-1) gave up four runs and six hits while striking out six and walking none in a loss to the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday, Sept. 3. He has struck out at least one hitter in each of his first 14 innings with the team.
Smoltz hit with first loss as Cardinal
John Smoltz was hit with his first loss as a Cardinal on Thursday as his team fell to the Brewers' 4-3. Smoltz went six innings and allowed four runs on six hits while striking out six and not walking a batter.
Our View: Smoltz looked like he started to run out of gas in the sixth inning, as he allowed three runs to give up the Cards' 2-1 lead. Smoltz still managed to strike out six in the game, and overall he still looked like a legit fantasy option.
Smoltz cruised through the first five innings in this one --
Smoltz cruised through the first five innings in this one -- permitting just three singles -- before running into trouble in the sixth. He allowed the first two runners to reach base and ended up getting tagged for a three-run homer by Casey McGehee. Overall, though, it was another impressive start for the elder statesman, who faced his toughest NL lineup to date since joining the Cardinals. In his three outings with St. Louis, Smoltz has compiled a 2.65 ERA and fanned 21 batters against just one walk. There’s no reason owners shouldn’t give him the nod again when he toes the rubber on Sept. 8 in Milwaukee against the Brewers again.

Smoltz coming back to St. Louis?
News: From The Sports Xchange: GM John Mozeliak suggested the Cardinals might try to re-sign RHP John Smoltz, who will be 43 next year. "There could be something there," said Mozeliak, who has seen two good starts by the veteran. "There is probably going to be a need for one starter going forward." The Cardinals will try to re-sign RHP Joel Pineiro as a free agent, but Smoltz could be a fallback. Smoltz said, "I definitely want to pitch next year. If the desire disappears, I'll be completely comfortable with the decision to walk away." [...]
