Penny signs with Giants
According to Sports Illustrated, former Red Sox's pitcher Brad Penny has signed a deal with the San Francisco Giants. Penny cleared waivers earlier this afternoon, and he chose to sign with the Giants over several others who were interested.
Our View: Well that sure didn't take long. The Giants have been interested in Penny since he became available, and they feel like they helped solidify their rotation with this move. They better hope for the same boost that John Smoltz got by heading to the NL, because Penny wasn't great for the Sox.

Cardinals | Smoltz hurls quality start Friday
St. Louis Cardinals SP John Smoltz allowed one run on four hits over six innings Friday, Aug. 28, against the Washington Nationals, according to The Associated Press. He walked one and struck out six, but ended up with a no-decision. Smoltz's ERA since joining the team is 0.82.
Smoltz strong again for Cards
News: Cardinals SP John Smoltz had another strong outing in his second start as a Cardinal. He went six strong innings, allowing one earned run on four hits. He struck out six and walked only one as his ERA since joining St. Louis went up to 0.82. [...]

In his first start with the Cards, Smoltz made a mechanical
In his first start with the Cards, Smoltz made a mechanical adjustment, getting his heel closer to the pitching rubber. The Cardinals also claim he has stopped tipping his pitches, which they believe led to Smoltz's dismal 8.33 ERA with the Red Sox. Since returning to the NL, the veteran hurler has compiled a 0.82 ERA and a fantastic 15/1 K/BB ratio in two starts. If he's still available, owners in all formats need to grab Smoltz for his next start on Sept. 3 against the Brewers.
Smoltz solid again for Redbirds
The John Smoltz reclamation tour rolled on Friday night, as the future Hall-of-Famer struck out six Nats in six innings, while allowing just one run, as the Cardinals won 3-2 at home.
Our View: Smotlz now has a 0.82 ERA through his first two Cardinal starts this season - a smidgen better than the 6.00 ERA he posted through his first two Red Sox starts.
Ten predictions for September
John Smoltz as a key member of the Cards' postseason rotation? Jon Paul Morosi's September predictions say you can bank on it.
Lohse throws pain-free bullpen
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Kyle Lohse was feeling good after a bullpen session on Thursday. He is currently on the DL with a strained groin and the team indicates that they would like for him to make a minor-league start before he is re-activated.
Our View: The Cardinals have not gotten what they were hoping for from Lohse this season, but he has put together some nice starts. With John Smoltz coming off of a strong performance in San Diego and a huge lead in the NL Central, they can afford to be patient with Lohse's rehab.
Cardinals | Boggs to start Saturday

Smoltz Smells Post-Season
It’s another National League reclamation project. John Smoltz is pitching for the St. Louis Cardinals…and pitching well.Smoltz, looked like he was done after signing a big contract with the Red Sox in the off-season.  In 8 starts, Smoltz had an ERA of 8.32!  At age 42, why would anybody even think of taking a chance on the

The Cardinals' staff had the right-hander make an adjustment
The Cardinals' staff had the right-hander make an adjustment following a bullpen session he threw on Aug. 20, and the results were hard to argue with. "It's pretty clear he was tipping his pitches," manager Tony La Russa said after the game Sunday. St. Louis has something of a history with this. It's one of the things the club's staff looks for when trying to "fix" a pitcher, and there was some statistical evidence to back up the claim as well. With runners on base, Smoltz's numbers in Boston were far worse than with the bases empty -- batters had a 63-point higher batting average and a 123-point uptick in slugging percentage. As telling as all that is, owners should take into consideration the fact that Smoltz made his Cardinals debut against a Padres club that ranks dead last in the Majors in runs scored. While the future Hall of Famer is certainly worth picking up, it would be wise to save a final judgment until after he throws again on Aug. 29 vs. a much tougher Nationals lineup.
Cardinals | Think Smoltz was tipping pitches
Matthew Leach, of MLB.com, reports the St. Louis Cardinals and SP John Smoltz think that he may have been tipping his pitches while playing for the Boston Red Sox earlier this year, particularly when he pitched from the stretch. The team had him make some adjustments during a bullpen session Thursday, Aug. 20. Smoltz said he also placed his heels closer to the pitching rubber when he pitched. His next start will come against the Washington Nationals Friday, Aug. 28.
Smoltz may have been tipping pitches
According to MLB.com, the Cardinals think that John Smoltz may have been tipping his pitches while he was in Boston. Smoltz made some mechanical adjustments before his start against the Padres on Sunday, and he allowed only three hits and struck out nine in five innings.
Our View: It would make sense that Smoltz was tipping pitches since he was hit so much harder the second and third times through the lineup, but the fact that he was facing the AL East could have also had something to do with it. Smoltz looked outstanding yesterday, but you should contain your excitement and expectations until he faces a team that isn't the equivalent of a Triple-A squad.

Combining motivation and an ideal landing place, John Smoltz crafts a good return
The best competitors often try to manufacture an edge or a reason to compete harder than the rest. In John Smoltz's return, also manufactured has been perhaps the perfect environment to contribute, writes Buster Olney. Plus Fay Vincent on Pete Rose.
Cardinals | Smoltz fans seven in five innings
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Joe Strauss reports St. Louis Cardinals SP John Smoltz fanned seven batters in five innings Sunday, Aug. 23, in his team debut. St. Louis beat the San Diego Padres 5-2.
Smoltz excellent in Cardinals debut
News: John Smoltz cleared his mind of all the bad things that happened to him in Boston, fixed his delivery and had a brilliant debut with the Cardinals. Smoltz struck out a season-high nine -- including seven in a row, which he'd never done before - and held the Padres to three hits over five scoreless innings in a 5-2 victory Sunday. Smoltz also had a bunt single and scored the first run for the NL Central-leading Cardinals, who retained their eight-game lead over the Chicago Cubs. He didn't walk a batter. Although manager Tony La Russa said Smoltz was tipping pitches, the veteran managed to regain his confidence. "I don't know to the extent how long it was going on, or if it was, but I just know it's refreshing to come and do something and feel like the old John," Smoltz said. [...]

A little more than two weeks after being designated for assignment
A little more than two weeks after being designated for assignment by the Red Sox, Smoltz returned to the familiar confines of the NL with great results. Granted, he was hurling against one of the weaker lineups in baseball, but he did everything right in this one, throwing 53 of 75 pitches for strikes and allowing just one extra-base hit. As poor as his tenure was with the Red Sox, his 33/9 K/BB ratio showed he still had something left in the tank, just not enough to hurl within the trenches of the AL East. Owners looking to add an arm to their rotations should strongly consider the future Hall of Famer, who will take the hill again on Aug. 29 vs. the Nationals.
Smoltz looks good for Cardinals
John Smoltz only issued three hits over five scoreless innings in Sunday's 5-2 win at San Diego. He had no walks and fired nine strikeouts.
Our View: Smoltz looked good in his debut with the Cardinals, and is worth consideration in NL-only leagues for his next turn in their rotation. He did not work out in Boston, but is already benefiting from a return to the NL.

John Smoltz tossed five scoreless innings and struck out nine Padres in the process to record a win on Sunday. The National League does wonders for a pitcher. [...]
Lohse placed on DL
The St. Louis Cardinals have placed starting pitcher Kyle Lohse on the 15-day DL with a left groin strain, according to beat writer Matthew Leach's Twitter page. The team recalled pitcher Mitchell Boggs is a corresponding move.
Our View: Lohse pulled up lame while running out a single last night, and he will make another trip to the DL. The Cards have to be discouraged with this injury, but the addition of John Smoltz may be even more important now.
Cardinals | Smoltz to make two starts
The Associated Press reports the St. Louis Cardinals told SP John Smoltz that he will make two starts, with the first coming against the San Diego Padres Sunday, Aug. 23. Smoltz threw the ball three times in 13 days to high school players after being released by the Boston Red Sox.
Smoltz ready to prove he isn't finished
News: John Smoltz wants to make one point perfectly clear: He is not finished. Smoltz, the former NL Cy Young Award winner, Cardinals on Thursday for the opener of a four-game series against the Padres and said he is ready to resurrect his career. The 42-year-old Smoltz signed with the NL Central-leading Cardinals on Wednesday after he cleared waivers following his release from the Red Sox. "The reasonable expectation is you are going to get a nasty guy on the mound who will regain his nastiness," Smoltz said before the game. "Otherwise, I wouldn't be here." [...]

Manager Tony La Rusa said Smoltz would make his Cardinals debut by starting Sunday, the team's official site reports. [...]
Smoltz likely to start Sunday
Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said that John Smoltz would likely get the start Sunday in San Diego and "probably would get at least a few turns in the rotation," according to the AP. Mozeliak also added that Smoltz didn't ask to start as a negotiating ploy. "He had very little demands," Mozeliak said. "He had no demands. From everything he had heard about this club, he was excited to take this opportunity. The reason for the start was just to get him work and know what we have."
Our View: The Cards' plan seems to be to use Smoltz as the No. 5 starter, giving him 5-6 starts before likely moving him into a setup role once the postseason begins. Smoltz was knocked around in Boston, but he had good peripherals and a return to the NL could do wonders.
Cardinals | Smoltz expected to start Sunday
The Associated Press reports St. Louis Cardinals SP John Smoltz is expected to start against the San Diego Padres Sunday, Aug. 23, according to general manager John Mozeliak. Mozeliak indicated that Smoltz will likely remain in the rotation for more than one start.
Smoltz agrees to deal with Central-best Cards
John Smoltz agreed to a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday, giving the 42-year-old former ace a chance to rejuvenate his career in the middle of a pennant race.Smoltz joined the NL Central leaders shortly after he cleared waivers, following his release by Boston. He was 2-5 with an 8.33 ERA in eight starts for the Red Sox.The Cardinals hope Smoltz can either fill a void as the fifth starter or provide right-handed relief in the bullpen.
Smoltz agrees to deal with Cards
News: John Smoltz will resume his major league career, agreeing to a contract with the Cardinals. The former Cy Young winner was released Monday by the Boston Red Sox after struggling as a starter. Central-leading Cardinals sign Smoltz
John Smoltz has signed with the St. Louis Cardinals, the team announced Wednesday.
It is unclear what Smoltz's immediate role with the Cardinals
It is unclear what Smoltz's immediate role with the Cardinals will be, as the team could elect to use him as a starter or a setup man. The veteran right-hander has made it clear that he prefers to start, however, and given that the untested Mitchell Boggs is currently holding down the final spot in the rotation, there's a good chance Smoltz slides into that role. Smoltz suffered through a rough stretch with the Red Sox this season, going 2-5 with an 8.53 ERA in eight starts before being designated for assignment on Aug. 7, but he'll likely find the going much easier in the Senior Circuit. NL-only owners will want to keep an eye on him, though it may be safest to wait and see how he fares instead of pouncing immediately.
Cardinals | Agree to deal with Smoltz
Updating a previous report, Joe Strauss, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports the St. Louis Cardinals agreed to terms with free-agent SP John Smoltz (Red Sox) Wednesday, Aug. 19. He is expected to receive another shot at starting with the team. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Smoltz officially a Redbird
Updating an earlier report, John Smoltz has now officially signed a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He will start for the team, and make a prorated amount of the veteran's minimum salary.
Our View: Who knows if he will start the whole rest of the season for the club (the team reportedly originally wanted him for their bullpen), but he is getting another shot after going 2-5 with a 8.33 ERA in Boston. A return to the National League could rejuvenate him (like another player now tearing the cover off the ball for the Cardinals), but wait at least one start before you consider adding him to your team.

Smoltz might become Cards' No. 5
News: From The Sports Xchange: Rookie right-hander Mitchell Boggs might have lost his tenuous hold on the fifth starter's job in the Cardinals' rotation. Boggs, though pitching near the strike zone better than he had in his previous start, nonetheless allowed nine hits and five runs in four innings Tuesday. He almost certainly will find himself back at Triple-A Memphis if the Cardinals sign 42-year-old veteran John Smoltz, as is strongly rumored. Smoltz, who wants to start, probably will be granted his wish by the Cardinals -- at least for a while -- and the next time this spot in the rotation comes around is Sunday in San Diego. The Cardinals could sign Smoltz, released by Boston, once he clears waivers Wednesday. They would have to pay him only about one-fourth the minimum salary the rest of the season, approximately $100,000. [...]
Cardinals | Smoltz to accept offer
Joe Strauss, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports free-agent pitcher John Smoltz (Red Sox) will accept the team's offer to be their fifth starter after clearing waivers Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 1 p.m. EDT. St. Louis would be responsible for paying Smoltz a prorated portion of the major league minimum, which will cost about $100,000. The Boston Red Sox must pay the rest of the vet's contract.

Smoltz signing in the Cards?
ESPN.com reports that John Smoltz is "strongly leaning towards" signing with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Our View: Smoltz told friends that he will make a decision on Wednesday when he officially becomes a free agent, and all indications are that he will sign with the Cardinals. He is a risk free option for the Birds and could be a valuable addition not only as a fifth starter and right arm in relief, but as a mentor (with loads of playoffs experience) for the Cardinals young arms. The Rangers, Dodgers and Marlins are considered interested, but not at the top of Smoltz's list.
Tigers | Unlikely to sign Smoltz

Cards discussing Smoltz as fifth starter
According to the Twitter page of Cardinals' beat writer Joe Strauss, the team has been working on an arrangement where John Smoltz would be signed as the team's fifth starter. The Cardinals are believed to be the front-runner for Smoltz's services.
Our View: The Cards will only need a fifth starter a few more times the rest of the season because of off-days, so under this theory Smoltz would pitch those days and be available out of the bullpen for the rest of the time. The Cardinals are emerging as the heavy favorite for Smoltz, and there could be a decision as soon as today by the veteran pitcher on his plans for the rest of the season.

It's unclear whether Smoltz will wind up pitching for another club or call it quits.

Sox close to releasing Smoltz
According to SI.com, the Boston Red Sox may release pitcher John Smoltz on Monday. The team is having trouble finding a trade partner due to roster bonuses, and Monday is the deadline by which a move must be made.
Our View: It is starting to sound like Smoltz may be getting released, as no one is biting on a trade at this point. The teams being mentioned as interested continue to include the Dodgers, Cardinals, Marlins, and Rangers, so look for one of those teams to be Smoltz's final destination.
Red Sox | Smoltz release likely
Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman reports the Boston Red Sox are leaning toward releasing SP John Smoltz Monday, Aug. 17, which is the deadline for them to pull off a trade. A release means the Red Sox would be on the hook for the remainder of the $5.5-million, one-year deal they gave to Smoltz in the winter. Although several teams are interested in Smoltz, the performance bonuses in his contract have complicated trade talks.
Smoltz coming back in '09
John Smoltz does not intend to retire, and is open to joining a club as either a starter or reliever, according to Fox Sports.
Our View: The Red Sox have until Monday to trade Smotlz, who they designated for assignment last Friday, but might have trouble doing so because of the money remaining on his $5.5 million contract. It's more likely that they will have to swallow the money, allowing him to become a free agent. The Dodgers, Cardinals, Marlins and Rangers are all in need of pitching help and have all expressed interest.

Marlins interested in Smoltz
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel is reporting that the Marlins have thrown their hat in the ring as a potential suitor for the recently designated John Smoltz. The Marlins are in need of a fifth starter, and Smoltz has a good relationship with Marlines' manager Fredi Gonzalez from their time in Atlanta.
Our View: Florida actually seems like a really good fit for Smoltz. He would be returning to the NL East, the division he has played in for his entire career, and he would be an upgrade over the bevy of pitchers the Marlins have been using for their fifth spot. It remains to be seen if the team will pursue, but look for them to be in the mix.

Smoltz won't pitch out of pen
According to the Providence Journal, John Smoltz has told the Red Sox that he won't pitch for them out of the bullpen.
Our View: This should effectively end Smoltz's brief tenure in Bean Town. The Red Sox have until Sunday to figure out what to do with him, but he'll almost certainly be traded. The Cardinals have already expressed interest.

La Russa interested in Smoltz
According to Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa has expressed interest in bringing John Smoltz aboard as a reliever.
Our View: As a reliever is probably how most teams value Smoltz at this point, since his stuff is still decent and he has proven capable of putting together good innings, just not five or six in a row.

Smoltz refuses assignment
FoxSports.com is reporting that starting pitcher John Smoltz has refused an assignment to Triple-A from the Red Sox. The team will now have to either trade or release him.
Our View: The Sox will try to work out a trade to get some relief from his contract, but if not then they will have to give him his release. It seems likely that he could pitch in the league again this year, as a few teams such as the Dodgers and Cardinals, have expressed at least a little interest.
Red Sox | Smoltz refuses option to minors
Ken Rosenthal, of FOXSports.com, reports Boston Red Sox SP John Smoltz has refused an assignment to the minors. The Red Sox now have the option of either trading him or releasing him. The Los Angeles Dodgers have shown interest in a trade, and Smoltz has cleared waivers, but any deal involving Smoltz would require a significant financial component. Smoltz receives $35,000 for each day he is on an active roster and other appearance-related bonuses. He also receives a $500,000 bonus if he is on an active roster and not the disabled list by the end of the season, and a $500,000 bonus if he is traded.

Smoltz clears waivers
John Smoltz has cleared waivers, according to MLB.com. The Red Sox have to either trade him, release him, or send him to the minors by Sunday.
Our View: There has been no definitive word from Smoltz on his future plans, but it would seem like he would keep pitching if he gets traded and gets another opportunity to start. No matter where he goes, he should not be viewed as any kind of fantasy option after his performance in Boston.

Tazawa slated for Tuesday
Junichi Tazawa has been slated to start Tuesday's game against the Tigers, according to the Boston Globe.
Our View: Tazawa will be making a spot-start in the rotation in place of the struggling John Smoltz, who was designated for assignment. Tazawa will have a strong supporting cast to help him succeed, and he is worth a look as a flier for AL-only leagues.
Rangers could look at Smoltz
The Rangers may consider acquiring John Smoltz, according to the Boston Globe.
Our View: Smoltz appears more likely to keep playing after his release than his ex-teammate Tom Glavine, and with many contending teams thin on pitching, like the Rangers and Dodgers, expect him to end up starting somewhere relatively soon.

John Smoltz isn't likely to reunite with the Braves, according to MLBlogs.com.

Red Sox's pitching depth quickly evaporates
1. This year has not been kind to future Hall of Famers and buddies Tom Glavine and John Smoltz. First, Glavine gets dumped by the Braves just when he was finishing a minor league rehab assignment -- and then no team wanted him. Now, Smoltz, in the wake of one of the worst of his 474 big league starts Thursday night for Boston against the Yankees, gets designated for assignment, essentially cut from the Red Sox in what could be a humbling end to a Hall of Fame career.
This likely brings an end to Smoltz's tenure with the Red Sox,
This likely brings an end to Smoltz's tenure with the Red Sox, one day after he allowed eight earned runs in 3 1/3 innings to the Yanks for his fifth loss in eight starts this season. Smoltz was battered around for an 8.33 ERA over 40 innings and eight starters with the Red Sox. After learning the news, he flew back home to Atlanta to weigh his options. Between the two stops, Tazawa, a member of the Japanese national team in the 2007 Baseball World Cup, had 94 strikeouts and 27 walks in 107 1/3 innings. He'll likely join the Red Sox bullpen.

Smoltz DFA'd by Red Sox
According to the Twitter page of Red Sox beat writer Amalie Benjamin, the team has designated pitcher John Smoltz for assignment.
Our View: This move shouldn't be a surprise considering the way Smoltz has pitched this season, but it's still the great John Smoltz getting DFA'd. When we get more info, we will pass it on, but it looks like Smoltz may be done.

The Associated Press reports Boston Red Sox SP John Smoltz was tagged for eight runs and nine hits in 3 1/3 innings Thursday, Aug. 6, against the New York Yankees. Yankees tag Smoltz for eight runs
News: Red Sox SP John Smoltz (2-5) was tagged for eight runs and nine hits in 3 1/3 innings during Thursday's 13-6 loss to the Yankees, sending his ERA to 8.33 for his eight starts this season. It was his most runs allowed since he gave up eight in a no-decision with Atlanta on May 28, 2006, at Wrigley Field. Smoltz carried a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the fourth before the Yankees broke out the bats. They scored eight times in the inning, which featured a three-run homer from Melky Cabrera off Smoltz. The veteran walked four, struck out three and allowed two homers. [...]

Smoltz gets bombed by Yanks
John Smoltz got lit up again on Thursday, this time by the hated Yankees as the Red Sox fell by a score of 13-6. Smoltz went 3.1 innings and allowed eight runs on nine hits while walking four and striking out three.
Our View: The Sox can't possibly keep throwing Smoltz out there every five days, because right now he is not capable of pitching well enough to keep them in games. His ERA is at 8.32, so no need to wait for the Sox to make a move before you get rid of him.
