However, Smoltz said he has no ill will toward his old team. "I have no ill feelings toward anybody or harbor any bitterness," Smoltz said. The right-hander who says he's "doing great" after major shoulder surgery finalized his $5.5 million, one-year agreement, confident he can still contribute and eager to pitch beyond 2009. Both expressed optimism about his shoulder after he was examined by assistant trainer Mike Reinold in December and team physician Dr. Thomas Gill on Monday when Smoltz passed his physical "with flying colors," Epstein said. "Both said this is the best-case scenario for how strong he is right now," Epstein said. "I don't know if John would say this, but we feel if we absolutely had to have him in for April, physically he'd be capable to do that but we're looking at the big picture here. ESPN.com reports the Boston Red Sox have officially signed SP John Smoltz (Braves) to a one-year, $5.5 million deal with $5 million in possible performance bonuses. The incentives include $125,000 for his first day on the active roster, $500,000 if he is on the active roster on the last day of the season, and $35,000 for each day after June 1 that he's not on the disabled list - up to $4.375 million. Smoltz could earn up to $1.35 million in bonuses if he wins comeback player of the year, the Cy Young Award or other such honors. And he has a clause that pays him $500,000 if he is traded during the season.

This marks the first time Smoltz will pitch for another Major League team after spending the last 20 seasons in Atlanta. Coming off right shoulder surgery that limited him to six appearances in 2008, the 41-year-old right-hander might not join the rotation until May or June. It may also take a month to shake off the rust and adjust to the AL. Still, Smoltz is well worth stashing away. The fact that he boasted a 36/8 K/BB ratio last season over 28 innings shows there's plenty left in the tank. Look for the Red Sox to bring him back slowly, as they already have a fair amount of pitching depth.
