Pittsburgh Pirates' Tom Gorzelanny is worth the gamble for the Chicago Cubs
John Grabow represents bullpen depth for the Cubs; he's a lefty who's not great against lefties but isn't terrible against hitters on either side, held back by below-average control and the lack of a good breaking ball. He's got an average fastball and average changeup, but the below-average slider means he doesn't have the lefty-killing weapon most managers expect a southpaw reliever to have. The surprising part of the deal the Pirates made with the Cubs is the inclusion of Tom Gorzelanny, the...

Cubs acquire Grabow, Gorzelanny from Pirates
The Chicago Cubs have landed a new left-hander for their bullpen, acquiring John Grabow from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a five-player trade.
The Cubs have just one left-hander on staff in Sean Marshall,
The Cubs have just one left-hander on staff in Sean Marshall, so adding Grabow and Gorzelanny helps fill that void. Grabow could get a few vulture saves against a lefty-heavy lineup, but he poses little threat to Kevin Gregg, who's done a respectable job as the Cubs closer. Grabow's departure elevates Joel Hanrahan into a setup role for fireman Matt Capps. Once viewed as the Pirates rotation anchor, Gorzelanny has dropped off the radar over the past few seasons, and now faces an uphill battle cracking the Cubs rotation. Hart, on the other hand, figures to get a shot at the Bucs rotation. The trade comes on the same day he picked up his third win, holding Houston to three earned runs over six innings to lower his ERA to 2.60. The 24-year-old Ascanio also has a shot of pitching his way into a starting role. He served as a reliever for the Cubs, but his tenure at Triple-A Iowa this season (3.16 ERA, 47/18 K/BB ratio in 12 GS) gives the Pirates another option for their ever-evolving rotation.

Ascanio joins Pirates
Jose Ascanio, Kevin Hart and infielder Josh Harrison were traded from Chicago to Pittsburgh in exchange for Tom Gorzelanny and John Grabow, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Our View: Ascanio held a 3.52 ERA over 15.1 innings of relief with Chicago. His fantasy value as a middle reliever does not look to improve in Pittsburgh.
Hart dealt to Pittsburgh
Kevin Hart, Jose Ascanio and infielder Josh Harrison were traded from Chicago to Pittsburgh in exchange for Tom Gorzelanny and John Grabow, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Our View: Kevin Hart left the Cubs with a three-game winning streak and a solid 2.60 ERA. He will have a weaker supporting cast in Pittsburgh, but is still worth employing in fantasy lineups for his next outing.
Gorzelanny shipped to Chicago
Tom Gorzelanny and reliever John Grabow have been traded from Pittsburgh to Chicago in exchange for pitchers Kevin Hart and Jose Ascanio, and third baseman Josh Harrison, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Our View: Gorzelanny held a disappointing 5.19 ERA over 8.2 innings of relief with Pittsburgh this season, but he can still develop into a solid starter at only 27 years old. He should benefit from going to a better team with Chicago as well.
According to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,
According to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates have dealt both John Grabow and Tom Gorzelanny to the Cubs. It's a done deal. Grabow will make an impact right away as a left-handed bullpen mate to Sean Marshall, and the hope is Gorzelanny will work through his struggles at Triple-A Iowa. [...]

Cubs | Finalizing deal for Grabow
Jon Greenberg, of ESPNChicago.com, reports the Chicago Cubs are in the process of finalizing a deal for Pittsburgh Pirates RP John Grabow, according to a source close to the situation. SP Tom Gorzelanny might be included in the deal, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. However, the deal remains incomplete.
Report: Grabow to Cubs "just about done"
A deal to send left-handed reliever John Grabow to the Cubs is "just about done," according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Tom Gorzelanny might also be involved in the trade. No word on who the Cubs are sending in return.
Our View: We are witnessing one of the most comprehensive fire-sales of the decade this week in Pittsburgh. This move would leave the Pirates "all but depleted of left-handed relievers at the top three levels of the organization." Yikes. Rumor has it they are trading all of PNC Park's toilets and seats to the White Sox for cash considerations, as well. Will the last one to leave Pittsburgh turn the lights off?
