Johan Santana only allowed one run over seven innings Friday in his longest outing of the spring so far. He scattered four hits and struck out six without walking a man.

Santana allowed two runs and six hits in four innings, striking out five and walking none. He gave up three doubles and threw 40 of 56 pitches for strikes. "I felt pretty good, because I was able to throw a lot of strikes," Santana said. Hardly a strong debut from Santana, but considering he was questionable
Hardly a strong debut from Santana, but considering he was questionable for Opening Day recently, his mere presence on the mound is encouraging. After the outing, Santana could speak of how he threw all his pitches -- fastball, slider and changeup and how well his body responded to his most ambitious workday since September. "I feel pretty good," said Santana. That was his bottom-line thought.

Nolasco shines against Mets
Ricky Nolasco outdueled Johan Santana on Thursday night, giving up one run off three hits and one walk while striking out four in four innings of work.
Our View: Nolasco emerged as a fantasy stud last season, and while he was roughed up in his first spring start, he's given up just one run and six combined hit and walks in eight innings since. If his past two outings provide any indication, Nolasco could be in line to build off his excellent 2008 season and threaten to gain status as one of the elite pitchers in the game.
Santana takes the mound, gives up three runs
Johan Santana pitched his first in-game outing of the spring against Florida on Thursday, allowing three runs off four hits while striking out two in 2.2 innings.
Our View: Don't worry much about the poor numbers, as we all know what Santana is capable of when healthy, so the good news is that he was finally able to take the mound and left without any setbacks to his elbow. There's still hope that he'll be able to lead the Mets as their starter in the season opener, though his availability for April 6 remains to be seen.
Santana to get first start
Johan Santana is set to start Thursday's Grapefruit League contest against the Florida Marlins, according to NJ.com. This will be Santana's first action Santana has seen this spring because of elbow tightness.

Johan will now throw batting practice on Saturday before the Mets' game against the Nationals at Tradition Field. The original plan was for him to throw three bullpen sessions before his first batting-practice outing. He threw one bullpen session, so now he should be at least six days ahead of his original schedule, by which he would not have made a start in an exhibition game until March 18, leaving merely 18 days between that game and the Mets' first game, against the Reds in Cincinnati on April 6.

News: Mets ace Johan Santana wants the ball on opening day. Santana threw 46 pitches off a mound early Wednesday in his most ambitious and productive bullpen session since the start of spring training, and made it clear he wants to start for New York on April 6 in Cincinnati despite concerns over his tender elbow. "I appreciate everything they're doing trying to protect me and trying to keep me healthy," Santana said. "But I'm a professional and I know exactly what it takes for me to be ready. I've been doing this for years now and I know exactly what I have to do and I'm pretty sure I'll be ready for opening day." Santana has an irritated triceps tendon that has caused discomfort in his throwing elbow. The two-time Cy Young winner has yet to pitch in a spring training game for the Mets, but he threw all of his pitches Wednesday under the watchful eye of pitching coach Dan Warthen. [...]

Santana's bothersome elbow is certainly not something to ignore on draft day, and it may bump him behind Tim Lincecum and CC Sabathia in the rankings, two guys he was typically on par with before the injury concerns, though it should also be noted that Santana has never missed an extended amount of time due to injury in his seven years as a starter.

Status: D.L.. Out for the season
A Mets source close to Omar Minaya told Jon Heyman of SI.com that the reason Minaya still has his job is strictly because of the three-year extension the GM signed in October 2008. Minaya is certainly on very thin ice, and Heyman believes manager Jerry Manuel is in a better position to last longer in the organization. The Mets are willing to spend in free agency, so Minaya will have the chance to build a contending team. If New York falls flat on their face again, you can bet Omar will be on the way out.
