News: Mets ace Johan Santana says that his opening day start could be in jeopardy as he continues to battle tightness in his elbow. "We have 162 games," Santana said on Saturday. "What we have to accomplish takes 162 games. Everything starts April 6, if it's going to be me or somebody else. It's tough to say right now." The left-hander said doctors have told him an irritated triceps tendon is causing the discomfort in his throwing elbow. [...]

Updating previous reports, New York Mets SP Johan Santana (elbow) met with manager Jerry Manuel and general manager Omar Minaya for approximately 40 minutes Saturday, Feb. 28 to discuss a plan of action for his elbow injury, caused by an irritated triceps tendon, according to The Associated Press. He is scheduled to throw a light bullpen session Sunday, March 1, and if all goes well, he would need two or three batting practice sessions, with two days off in between, before making his first Grapefruit League start. If Santana continues to experience discomfort, he could be sent to New York for further tests and may miss the season opener. Santana believes the tightness in his elbow could have been caused by overuse early in camp.

Status: D.L.. Out for the season
A Mets source close to Omar Minaya told Jon Heyman of SI.com that the reason Minaya still has his job is strictly because of the three-year extension the GM signed in October 2008. Minaya is certainly on very thin ice, and Heyman believes manager Jerry Manuel is in a better position to last longer in the organization. The Mets are willing to spend in free agency, so Minaya will have the chance to build a contending team. If New York falls flat on their face again, you can bet Omar will be on the way out.
