Surgery remains probable for Devine. What type of surgery -- exploratory arthroscopic at one end of the spectrum, a full ligament replacement at the other -- hasn't yet been determined. "Joey is going to get more tests done with Dr. Andrews," Oakland manager Bob Geren said Wednesday. "The doctor wants a bone scan and a CT scan." Even if a tear is revealed on an MRI, the extent of the tear sometimes is not. Hence, the further testing. A ligament-replacement procedure on the elbow, better known as "Tommy John surgery," usually sidelines a pitcher for a minimum of 12 months, the worst-case scenario.

Status: D.L.. Out for the season
Joey Devine played catch Saturday for the first time since undergoing Tommy John Surgery in April. Devine is aiming to be at full health by the start of spring training 2010. If he reaches his goal, there's a good chance he'll be battling Andrew Bailey for ninth-inning duties next season.
