Analysis: One night after he was a late scratch due to a stiff back, Crede said his back was feeling much better when he arrived at the ballpark on Tuesday. He also said the decision to have him rest on Monday night was just a precautionary one. Although Crede has endured two back surgeries in the last two years, his back has not been a significant issue this season. Monday night marked only the third time Crede missed a start to rest his back. He went into Tuesday's game batting .238 with 11 homers and 35 RBIs.

Crede, who is hitting .228 with 10 home runs with 27 RBIs in 47 games this season, has a history with back injuries. He underwent back surgery in 2007 that limited him to 47 games as a member of the Chicago White Sox. Last season, he played in only 97 games because of more back issues. Occasional back stiffness flare-ups are par for the course with Crede, but owners should monitor this situation to make sure it�s nothing more long-term. Infielder Matt Tolbert started at third in Crede�s place Sunday and hit leadoff and shortstop Brandon Harris moved from the leadoff spot to the five-hole.

Crede missed his second straight game due a swollen left knee. The third baseman fouled a couple of pitches off the leg -- one right above the knee and one right below -- in a May 30 contest and had to leave that game after the swelling limited his movement in the field. On Tuesday, Crede's knee remained swollen but he was able take batting practice with the team and field grounders at third. Manager Ron Gardenhire said Crede could possibly return to the lineup on Wednesday if he feels like he's able to move around just fine.

General manager Bill Smith said that Joe Crede is interested in returning to the Twins next season. "His agent [Scott Boras] called shortly after the season and expressed [Crede's] interest in playing here," said Smith. "We're going to look at all options including Joe Crede and the young guys that we have. We'll try to make the best decision moving forward." Danny Valencia isn't quite ready for the majors, so if Smith exhausts the available free agent and trade options, a one-year incentive-laden contract for Crede might not be the worst thing.
