Rays | Want Niemann to learn in final start
The St. Petersburg Times' Marc Topkin reports Tampa Bay Rays SP Jeff Niemann has thrown 175 2/3 innings this season, which is 26 2/3 more than his previous high. The Rays want him to make his final start and learn how to pitch while he's somewhat mentally fatigued. "I'd like him to go out there and pitch and understand that at this time of the year if you look up at the scoreboard and it doesn't say 93 (mph), don't try to have the next pitch be 93; just pitch," manager Joe Maddon said. "Just pitch and get people out. I think that actually would be a good lesson for him."

Niemann struggled in his outing on Monday and has cranked up his innings count to 175 2/3 -- easily his professional high. Still, good size and durability gives the Rays reason to believe another shouldn't hurt. "I really want him to make it," the manager said. "I want him to go out there and pitch somewhat tired mentally and try to take a different approach into the game. As far as I know, he's fine, and I haven't heard anything negative."
