Lugo could be released by Sox
The Boston Globe is reporting that the Red Sox may release infielder Julio Lugo when the injured Jed Lowrie returns from the DL. Lugo has played only sparingly in the last two weeks, as Nick Green has been seeing a bulk of the time at shortstop.
Our View: Lugo isn't happy sitting the bench, and the Sox will have plenty of other options in Green and Lowrie after the All-Star break. Expect Lugo to be released, but he should manage to catch on somewhere else.

News: Red Sox SS Jed Lowrie, working his way back from wrist surgery, will resume his rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday, four days after getting hit by a pitch in the left knee. He still has a chance of returning to the Red Sox before the All-Star break, according to MLB.com, but the team might decide to wait until afterward just to be safe. "That might be realistic, I don't know," manager Terry Francona said. "We've kind of told him all along. 'Let us know how you feel, when you think you're ready. We don't want to rush you,' and that was even when things weren't going real well here. We said, 'Just kind of stay on the schedule and we'll try not to make decisions based on how we're playing.' That's not a good way to do it. I think it's easy to [rush him], but it doesn't help anybody." [...]

Jason Bay received a day off on Saturday.
Analysis: There's a chance Lowrie could play a couple games before the All-Star break, although it's just as likely that the Red Sox will hold off on activating the shortstop until after the break. There isn't a great sense of urgency to rush Lowrie back given Nick Green's strong play at short, but his presence would undoubtedly be a welcome sight for Red Sox fans and fantasy owners alike. Stay tuned to see if he gets back on track after the missed time with the hurt knee.

Our View: The Red Sox will have a tough decision to make once he is able to return in regards to Lowrie and Green. Lowrie started out the season just 1-for-18 and Green has shown he is respectable against major league pitching. Julio Lugo is also in the mix, but it is unlikely they would send the veteran to the minors.

Our View: The timetable is up to him, and skipper Terry Francona noted that he is doing terrific in his rehab. Lowrie will have a good chance to start at shortstop, as neither Julio Lugo nor Nick Green have been doing a solid job. Lowrie shall remain stashed on rosters in AL-only and deeper mixed leagues.
