"I think there's a pretty good chance that he's going to have a surgery in the next day or so, but we're still having some internal discussions," Francona said. The wrist has been problematic to Lowrie since May of last season. Though rest and rehab seemed to do the trick over the winter, Lowrie started experiencing discomfort in the wrist again during the latter stages of Spring Training and through the first few regular-season games. At the time the Red Sox shut Lowrie down, he had just one hit in 18 at-bats. Stay tuned.

The shortstop, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 15, will be presented with three options when he visits Dr. Donald Sheridan in Arizona: 1) Continue rehabbing his wrist after he received two cortisone shots earlier this week, 2) Undergo a surgical procedure which would involve reattaching the fractured bone, the ulnar styloid, or 3) Have surgery to remove the bone, which would effectively end his season. "The last thing I want is surgery," Lowrie said. "But if it's something that will make this better and be the long-term solution, I'll do it." Julio Lugo, scheduled to return from a knee tear later this month, would get a bump in fantasy value if Lowrie misses the rest of the season.

Red Sox | Lowrie could undergo surgery

Lowrie will have three options: more injections and rehab, a minor surgical procedure in which a bone would be removed or a more complicated surgery that would likely end his season. The minor surgery would likely sideline him for six weeks. "(Surgery is) on the table," Lowrie said. "It's not necessarily the answer, but it might be. But it could be that cortisone in a different spot and (more) rehab is a different solution."

Time away could actually help Lowrie clear his head. The 24-year-old shortstop got off to a rough start, going 1-for-18 in his first five games. With Julio Lugo sidelined as well, the Red Sox are left with Nick Green and/or Velazquez to start at short.

Lowrie is struggling
Jed Lowrie was hot in spring training, but has been struggling so far in the regular season with eight strikeouts and only one hit over 18 at-bats, according to the Boston Globe. Skipper Terry Francona is not concerned as he said, "It almost never fails, but the guy that is swinging the bat the best in spring training struggles early in the season. He hit that last ball Friday night real good, which is good to see. He has actually had pretty good at-bats. He is gotten in deep counts."
Our View: Lowrie needs to get on track before Julio Lugo returns, which could be in late-April.

Perez chased from start early
Oliver Perez lasted just 0.2 innings in Saturday's 9-3 loss to the Red Sox. He gave up six runs, one earned, on four walks and two hits, including a two out grand slam to Jed Lowrie.
Our View: Perez has 14 walks against 10 strikeouts this spring, and the Mets are likely concerned. They don't have much depth amongst their starters so they will need Perez to exhibit better control and consistency once the regular season starts.
Lowrie hits grand slam
Jed Lowrie hit a grand slam off of Oliver Perez in the first inning and help propel the Red Sox to a 9-3 win over the Mets. He finished the game 1-for-2 with a walk, four RBI, and a run scored.
Our View: Lowrie had just two home runs in 81 games last season, but he has accounted for three this spring. He's not likely to turn into the next Dustin Pedroia but he should provide good value for a very modest draft day investment.
