Bruce, who has been on the disabled list since he fractured his right wrist on July 11, hit soft tosses with his bat Sunday and expects to start hitting off a pitching machine "if everything feels good [Monday]." To this point, Bruce has been pain-free but planned to be careful to prevent any setbacks. Obviously, the biggest question remaining is when he can return. Also in question is whether he will be able to go out on a Minor League rehab assignment before Triple-A Louisville's regular season ends Sept. 7. The Bats will also participate in the playoffs, which could offer some playing time. For now Bruce is playing it cautious, which is why he hasn't set a target date for his return. Stay tuned.

MLBlogs.com is reporting that Reds' outfielder Jay Bruce has been cleared to begin hitting. Bruce hopes to hit off a pitching machine on Monday and then progress to taking batting practice.

Our View: Th team hasn't set a timetable for a return, but Bruce would like to play again this season. He still has a ways to go, but the good news is that the biggest step, getting cleared to start swinging, is behind him now.
