In somewhat of an upset, Jason Schmidt has been named as the Dodgers starter for this Friday, according to MLBlogs.

Our View: It's somewhat of an upset because Schmidt has absolutely nothing left. His fastball topped out in the low '80s on Sunday with very little movement, and the Marlins batters appeared as if they were taking batting practice. Don't expect this awful experiment to go on much longer, as any team with serious title aspirations won't make it there with Schmidt in their rotation.

But he didnt have enough velocity on his fastball to consistently get outs, which led to a three-run third that chased him from the game. The veteran righty earned the start because he fared well last time out (5 IP, 5 H, 3 ER) in a win. Where the club decides to go with him in the long run remains to be seen, but for now he remains in the rotation and will take his next turn July 31 vs. the Braves in Atlanta.

Jason Schmidt will likely retire, reports Ken Gurnick of MLB.com. Schmidt filed for free agency on Wednesday, but said he isn't planning to pitch next year and is likely to retire. Schmidt went 2-2 with a 5.61 ERA in four starts in 2009, but was hampered by problems with his surgically-repaired right shoulder in August.
