News: From The Sports Xchange: RHP Jason Schmidt didn't receive any sort of commitment from club officials after pitching 7 2/3 shutout innings for Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday night against Nashville. Dodgers manager Joe Torre said Schmidt "maybe" will pitch in the majors "at some point in the not-too-distant future." But Torre also was extremely cautious in his comments, adding that "we have been teased (by Schmidt) before." [...]

Jason Schmidt will likely retire, reports Ken Gurnick of MLB.com. Schmidt filed for free agency on Wednesday, but said he isn't planning to pitch next year and is likely to retire. Schmidt went 2-2 with a 5.61 ERA in four starts in 2009, but was hampered by problems with his surgically-repaired right shoulder in August.
