The Associated Press reports Los Angeles Dodgers SP Jason Schmidt (leg) threw 89 pitches in an extended spring game Tuesday, April 28, before leaving after getting hit in the left leg with a line drive. No further details were available on his condition.

Club officials insisted the switch was the result of miscommunication and not an indication of any physical setback. The reason given for the change in plans, according to trainer Stan Conte, was to continue to rebuild Schmidt's arm strength to the 100-pitch mark before beginning the rehab assignment. Schmidt is expected to make at least one more extended spring start before advancing to Class A.

Jason Schmidt will likely retire, reports Ken Gurnick of MLB.com. Schmidt filed for free agency on Wednesday, but said he isn't planning to pitch next year and is likely to retire. Schmidt went 2-2 with a 5.61 ERA in four starts in 2009, but was hampered by problems with his surgically-repaired right shoulder in August.
