Our View: Schmidt is not going to hold the fifth spot in the Dodgers' rotation, and does not garner fantasy attention in anything but deeper NL-only leagues.

Schmidt said he's still learning how to use his rebuilt shoulder, but he's had an unexplained breakthrough in the past 10 days. Schmidt said he considered his outing Sunday as progress. Although he will start the season on the disabled list -- where he spent half of 2007 and all of 2008 -- he will remain with the club and make rehab starts at either Class A Inland Empire or Triple-A Albuquerque.

Our View: This was Schmidt's first loss of the spring, and it came with mixed results. His four strikeouts indicated his velocity was up, but his three walks raised some red flags.

Jason Schmidt will likely retire, reports Ken Gurnick of MLB.com. Schmidt filed for free agency on Wednesday, but said he isn't planning to pitch next year and is likely to retire. Schmidt went 2-2 with a 5.61 ERA in four starts in 2009, but was hampered by problems with his surgically-repaired right shoulder in August.
