Jason Schmidt is headed to the 15-day DL, according to MLB.com. Schmidt had major shoulder surgery last June, and said he's been progressing steadily since an early Spring setback.He sporadically throws off a mound, but is months away from pitching competitively.

Jason Schmidt will likely retire, reports Ken Gurnick of MLB.com. Schmidt filed for free agency on Wednesday, but said he isn't planning to pitch next year and is likely to retire. Schmidt went 2-2 with a 5.61 ERA in four starts in 2009, but was hampered by problems with his surgically-repaired right shoulder in August.
