Peavy a very risky play for Week 22
News: The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the White Sox announced Monday that Jake Peavy won't make his debut Thursday at Wrigley Field against the Cubs. The hope is that the right-hander won't be ruled out to pitch for the White Sox this week. In his fourth rehab start for Triple-A Charlotte on Saturday, Peavy was shut down after 3 1/3 innings because of tightness in his right elbow, which was stung by a comebacker last Monday. The goal was to get him close to 100 pitches, but he had to settle for 68. Peavy will rejoin the White Sox on the road trip and be examined by trainer Herm Schneider. [...]

The Arlington Daily Herald is reporting that Jake Peavy will travel to Minnesota on Monday to be evaluated by White Sox's team doctors. Peavy was forced to leave his last rehab start in the fourth inning with elbow tightness.

Peavy suffers setback in rehab start
News: The Chicago Tribune reports that White Sox SP Jake Peavy had a setback in in his return from an ankle injury on Saturday in a rehab start for Triple-A Charlotte. Peavy was hit on the elbow by a line drive in his previous rehab start and experienced tightness near that elbow on Saturday in his next outing. He lasted only 3 1/3 innings due to the injury. The elbow tightness is thought to be a result of Peavy taking a line drive off the elbow in a Triple-A appearance on Aug. 24. More details haven't been released, but it's surely a concerning piece of news for the righty as he attempts to pitch for the White Sox.

Peavy leaves rehab start early
Jake Peavy was forced to leave his minor league rehab game with Triple-A Charlotte after just 3.1 innings on Saturday with elbow tightness, according to the Chicago Tribune's Mark Gonzales.
Our View: The injury is thankfully not pitching related, and is just soreness stemming from a line drive he took off the elbow last week. It is a setback nonetheless, however, and with the way the White Sox have been floundering lately, potentially season-ending news for the team's playoff hopes.

His first start with the White Sox remains unclear, but he does plan on joining the team Aug. 30 or 31.

Peavy to start with Charlotte Saturday
Updating an earlier report, Jake Peavy will make his next start Saturday with Triple-A Charlotte, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Our View: Peavy's elbow felt fine during today's side session, but the Sox felt it was best for him to make a fourth rehab start in the minors prior to returning to the majors. The club is yet to name a starter for Saturday's game against the Yankees.
Coach: Peavy needs more rehab time
News: From The Sports Xchange: After watching Jake Peavy make about 10 tosses in what was supposed to be a long-toss session and then a bullpen session, bullpen coach Juan Nieves whistled to the White Sox dugout and gave the throat-slash sign. Just like that, Jake Peavy's day was done, and the pitcher's chances of making his debut for the White Sox this weekend in New York is in doubt. Peavy's pitching elbow -- hit by a line drive in his last rehab start -- is still bothering him. "I know that if he wouldn't have gotten hit by the ball (in his Monday rehab assignment start) that he would be pitching Saturday (in New York), but him getting hit by the ball in his elbow, we're unable to do anything (Wednesday)," pitching coach Don Cooper said. "So right now, it doesn't look like he's going to be making that start. (Thursday) we'll try again. We'll try to take it out again. Hopefully we don't have to push him back a day for this, but again, each day is going to give us more information." [...]
Peavy to attempt side session
ESPN Chicago reports that Jake Peavy will try to throw a side session on Thursday in Boston.
Our View: Depending on how Peavy looks, he may make another minor-league rehab start Sunday or Monday. The White Sox felt he needed at least one additional rehab outing before joining the team after he was hit on the elbow by a line drive in Monday's game with Charlotte. If his pitch count reaches 80-90 he could be activated in time to start against the Red Sox in the series at U.S. Cellular Field September 4th-7th.
White Sox | Peavy to throw side session
ESPNChicago.com's Bruce Levine reports Chicago White Sox SP Jake Peavy (ankle, elbow) will try to throw a side session Thursday, Aug. 27. It will be determined if Peavy will make another rehab start over the weekend after the session.
White Sox | Peavy to throw Thursday
Scott Merkin, of MLB.com, reports Chicago White Sox SP Jake Peavy (ankle, elbow) will attempt to throw a bullpen session Thursday, Aug. 27.
Peavy's 'pen session has been pushed back to Thursday, with
Peavy's 'pen session has been pushed back to Thursday, with the prime area for concern now having moved from his right ankle to his pitching elbow. The ailing righty has been out of action since June 8 due to a strained tendon in his right ankle, but he was encouraged by his third Minor League rehab effort on Aug. 24 at Gwinnett. During those five scoreless innings, Peavy also took a line drive off said pitching elbow, an unfortunate mishap that just might push back his White Sox debut to next week. With Peavy seemingly out of the picture for his proposed start on Aug. 29 in New York, Minor Leaguers Daniel Hudson and Carlos Torres stand as the top choices to take his start that day.

Peavy unlikely for Saturday?
Jake Peavy is unlikely to make his first start with the Sox Saturday, according to ESPN Chicago. Peavy was unable to throw his scheduled side session today due to lingering effects of being struck by a line drive in his rehab start on Monday.
Our View: Peavy is still getting treatment on his pitching arm, to relieve the swelling and soreness. Pitching coach Don Cooper hopes that the Sox do not throw Peavy into battle until his soreness subsides. Minor leaguers Carlos Torres or Dan Hudson are considered the top candidates to start Saturday's game.

White Sox | Peavy unlikely to start Saturday
Bruce Levine, of ESPNChicago.com, reports Chicago White Sox SP Jake Peavy (ankle, elbow) is unlikely to make his first start for the team Saturday, Aug. 29. Pitching coach Don Cooper said Peavy was unable to throw his side session Wednesday, Aug. 26, because of lingering effects of being hit by a line drive in his last rehab start. Peavy is still receiving treatment on his arm, which had some swelling and soreness. Cooper is hoping Peavy chooses not to pitch until his elbow soreness has subsided.
Peavy's Saturday return still TBD
News: From The Sports Xchange: Obviously, Jake Peavy would like to start Saturday's game at Yankee Stadium and help right the ship. Unfortunately, the fact he took a comebacker off the right elbow in his third rehab assignment start for Charlotte on Monday now has everything up in the air, including his Sox debut. "I think it is a fight because every part of me wants to be out there Saturday in a great venue against a great team, giving my team a chance to win," Peavy said. "It's so much up in the air with getting hit, and with three starts in the minor leagues and trying to put it all together, you really don't know where you're at." In talking with the media for close to 10 minutes before the game Tuesday, Peavy sounded every bit a conflicted man, weighing what's at stake for his new club as well as his health. Sometimes it sounded as if his mind was made up and he would in fact make the start against the Yankees. Case in point: "We're going to treat it, treat it and treat it some more, and hopefully things will calm down, we'll be able to throw the next few days and this weekend won't be altered." Other times he sounded like the sting felt by the comebacker has put this weekend in jeopardy. "Obviously, the decision would be a little easier to make if we weren't coming off a ball hitting me square in the elbow," he said. "It's just frustrating to come out for (Tuesday's) work day and not being able to play catch." [...]

More will be known about how Peavy responds after a scheduled side bullpen session prior to Wednesday's contest. White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen and pitching coach Don Cooper didn't alter their stances on the matter from Monday night. If Peavy is healthy and feels ready to compete at his desired level, they will welcome him into the rotation on Aug. 30 against the Yankees. Otherwise, the White Sox believe they have other options at Charlotte in Dan Hudson and Carlos Torres. Cooper ruled out middle reliever D.J. Carrasco from stepping up and making the start because he's too valuable in his current role.

Peavy on track to start Saturday
According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, if Jake Peavy (ankle) tosses a pain-free bullpen session on Wednesday, he will make his first start for the White Sox this weekend against the Yankees.
Our View: Which would put him a little ahead of schedule, since the team originally thought he would not be ready until early September. He has looked good in his rehab outings, while suffering no apparent setbacks, so the odds are good that he will pitch this weekend.

The Associated Press reports Chicago White Sox SP Jake Peavy (ankle, elbow) was hit on the right elbow by a line drive near the end of his rehab start Monday, Aug. 24, but made one more pitch to finish his outing. Peavy will travel with the White Sox to Boston Tuesday, Aug. 25, and no decision has been made when he'll pitch next. "We haven't set any definite plans. We haven't set a hard date. The timetable for Peavy's long-awaited debut with the White Sox may be more up in the air than ever. "It's sore," Peavy said. "I'm sure it's going to be sore [Tuesday]. Hopefully it won't be a problem." It's too bad, as the former National League Cy Young Award winner tossed five scoreless innings before being removed. Peavy, who has been sidelined with a strained ankle since June 8, who hit 94 mph with a fifth-inning fastball, will rejoin the White Sox in Boston on Tuesday, and a decision will be made then on what comes next.

Peavy OK after hit by line drive
News: White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy was hit on his right elbow Monday near the end of a minor league rehab start, but was able to stay in the game. The right-hander will travel to join the White Sox on Tuesday in Boston, but no decision has been made yet as to when he will next pitch. "We haven't set any definite plans. That is the bottom line," Peavy said. "We haven't set a hard date. People have speculated on dates. But we're just taking it start by start. I don't know how sore my elbow will be. Obviously, that could be a factor. We'll see." Peavy took a liner off his elbow in the fifth inning of his third rehab start, and only needed one more pitch - a 90 mph fastball - to end his scoreless outing for Charlotte of the International League. "I didn't hit (me) that hard," Peavy said. "I made a good pitch after that. ... I don't think it got me too square." Peavy's elbow was swollen and red after Charlotte's 4-1 victory over Gwinnett in the first game of a doubleheader. "It's sore," Peavy said. "I'm sure it's going to be sore (Tuesday). Although Guillen downplayed Peavy's possible availability, there's a chance Peavy could be pitching as soon as this weekend in New York. Peavy makes his third Minor League rehab start for Triple-A Charlotte on Monday at Gwinnet (Georgia), after experiencing a little back stiffness following rehab start No. 2 on Aug. 18 in Durham, which caused the White Sox to move the next effort back one day. Peavy has not worked in the Majors since June 8, due to a strained tendon in his right ankle. He also had his right foot immobilized in a protective boot for seven weeks. With that period of inactivity in mind, coupled with the team's patient approach, Guillen believes Peavy will need one more preparatory start before his return. "[We're ready] when he says he's ready to pitch," Guillen said.
Guillen optimistic about Peavy
News: White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen remains optimistic that Jake Peavy will pitch again this season, even if he's not relying on the right-hander's return. "I don't count on him," said Guillen. Peavy will make his third rehab start Monday for Triple-A Charlotte, trying to work his way back from a strained tendon in his right ankle. Guillen said he doesn't want Peavy to risk another injury by returning too soon, and respects how GM Ken Williams is handling the rehab. "Kenny is on top of this very well. Another general manager would be like 'Hey we brought you here to pitch.' We know when we got him, we said 'Listen just take your time, go do your (rehab) and hopefully we can use you this year,"' Guillen said. "He wants to pitch, that's why I worry about him. Peavy's (last?) rehab start delayed
News: White Sox SP Jake Peavy's third rehab start was pushed back an extra day because of general soreness. Peavy was originally scheduled to pitch Sunday but now will make the start Monday for Triple-A Charlotte. "We want to have a real good work day in between, so we're giving it an extra day. I had some back tightness," Peavy said. "When you haven't started in over 2 1/2 months, you're going to have that soreness. I just jumped back into it, so you kind of expect that soreness to be expected." Peavy's rehab start pushed back
MLB.com reports that Jake Peavy's rehab start for Triple-A Charlotte has been pushed back a day to Monday.
Our View: No worries here. Peavy's start was moved from Sunday just to give him an extra day of rest. He did experience some back tightness after his last start, but that is a typical side effect of an increased workload. He's still on schedule to return from the DL and make his White Sox debut in early September.

After throwing a rigorous 'pen session Friday at U.S. Cellular Field, the White Sox opted to give Peavy an extra day of rest. The righty, who's gone 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA with 10 K's in seven innings over two rehab outings, is slated to toss roughly 75 pitches over five innings Aug. 24. There's still not a definitive time frame for Peavy to make his first start in a White Sox uniform, but you'll want him on your side whenever that time comes.

Peavy frustrated after rehab start
News: White Sox SP Jake Peavy (ankle) wasn't at his best in his second rehab start for Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday, allowing four runs -- three earned -- on five hits over four innings. He recorded five strikeouts and hit a batter. "I'm a long way from where I'm used to being," Peavy told MLB.com. "Think about it from where I am. My body feels like it's January. As the game went along, I tried to put some more effort and intensity into it. I just wasn't able to get to where I'm used to being. The command and velocity were not where they're gonna be." [...]
Peavy struck out five, hit one batter and didn't issue a walk
Peavy struck out five, hit one batter and didn't issue a walk while throwing 44 of his 67 pitches for strikes. Tuesday's effort represents a one-inning increase from his first start Aug. 13 at home for the Knights against Pawtucket, along with a bump up by 24 pitches. To get back to the White Sox on Aug. 28 at Yankee Stadium or sometime in the first week of September, Peavy is working through a Spring Training-like workload at the end of August. While Peavy and the White Sox both anxiously await his return to the rotation in the midst of this playoff push, Peavy has taken a pragmatic approach since he arrived in Chicago. He's scheduled to make his next start Aug. 23, and as White Sox general manager Ken Williams pointed out before Peavy departed for Charlotte, the actual on-field results don't mean a thing. It's all about Peavy feeling ready to compete at his optimum level before joining the White Sox, whether it's sooner or a little later.
Peavy works four innings in rehab
Jake Peavy gave up three earned runs and five hits over four innings in Tuesday's rehab start with Triple-A Charlotte. He did not have any walks with five strikeouts.
Our View: 44 of his 67 pitches landed for strikes. Peavy should make at least one more rehab appearance while building up his arm strength, and looks to be on target to make his first start with the Sox by the end of the month.

Peavy will pitch in another rehab game Tuesday, Aug. 18. "My ankle feels OK," Peavy said. "It's certainly not 100 percent, but it's getting there. I'm sure tomorrow I'm going to be sore [all over]. When you get in game situations, adrenaline takes over and you do things you never do otherwise. The soreness after pitching, it's a good soreness." According to The Chicago Tribune's Mark Gonzales, former Chicago Cubs SP and current San Diego Padres commentator Rick Sutcliffe warned the White Sox should be extremely cautious with SP Jake Peavy (ankle) while he recovers from a right ankle injury. "He's like a big old thoroughbred," Sutcliffe said. "You have to take care of the reins... In 1985 with the Cubs, I was on the disabled list three times because I tried to come back too soon from a hamstring injury. I didn't do me or the team any favors."

He also went through all the defensive drills for a pitcher.

Peavy successfully tested the strained tendon in his right ankle
Peavy successfully tested the strained tendon in his right ankle during a second bullpen session Wednesday in San Diego. However, even with the progress, Peavy understands how the last thing on his recovery agenda would be to rush his way back to the White Sox after not starting a game since June 8 at home against Arizona. Talk of his Minor League rehab assignment, which pitching coach Don Cooper mentioned could start Aug. 13, has not really been addressed yet. Though in his bullpen session Saturday, Peavy will face some hitters standing in, and then the pitcher will sit down with Cooper, general manager Ken Williams and manager Ozzie Guillen to decide the next course of action. Stay tuned.

News: The Chicago Daily Herald reports that White Sox SP Jake Peavy threw 50 pitches in the bullpen Sunday. Everything went well, but I have long way to go, Peavy said. Peavy will need at least three weeks to get his stamina back, but the fact that he is pitching pain-free is a good sign for anyone holding out hope that he can contribute to a fantasy playoff run. We will keep you updated on his status going forward.

He had been in a protective boot for about six weeks, but has been running and riding the bike for the past couple of weeks. Peavy planned to return to San Diego on Sunday evening to work on getting into better overall physical condition. He also figures to have a few more bullpen sessions, followed by a couple of Minor League starts, before the White Sox start considering Peavy for the rotation. The club is targeting late August for his return.

Peavy has been walking and running pain-free, and he's been throwing from flat ground without any apparent setbacks. He was due to map out a full rehabilitation plan after Saturday's contest. Late August remains a targeted time for Peavy to return. "Physically, the ankle feels fine; it's just a little weak," Peavy said. The 2007 Cy Young winner might be going to a hitter-friendly ballpark in U.S. Cellular Field but his new team also fields a much better offense than what he had in San Diego, thus giving him a better chance to notch a win every time he takes the hill.
