Romero was suspended for the first 50 games of next season after testing positive for a banned substance. Romero earned two wins in Philadelphia's World Series victory over Tampa Bay last season. He has called the penalty unfair, ESPN.com reported earlier this month. He contends the supplement he took during the season was legal because he bought it over the counter at a nutrition store in the United States. An arbitrator decided against Romero in November. Romero went 4-4 last season with a 2.75 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 59 innings. He appeared in 81 games and had one save.

Romero will still be allowed to participate in Spring Training workouts and games. However, it is uncertain if he will play for Puerto Rico in the 2009 World Baseball Classic.

Phil Sheridan, of The Philadelphia Inquirer, reports Philadelphia Phillies RP J.C. Romero insists that he is not guilty of purposely consuming a banned substance. "One thing I'm going to say, I'm a man and I'm accountable for my actions," Romero said. "If I'm guilty of something, you know what? I will face it. But I'm not guilty, and I'm not letting people that don't really know me judge me over something and accuse me of something that I didn't do." Romero only used an over-the-counter supplement that he bought at a retail store. However, he is being banned because of negligence in not knowing what was in the supplement. Romero said he checked with the team's strength and conditioning coach Dong Lien and his personal nutritionist who saw nothing in the supplement that was on the MLB's banned substance list. Lien submitted the sample to MLB for testing and tests showed the supplement contained a substance that could give a positive test. However, nobody informed Romero that there was a problem with the supplement. Romero tested positive for the substance in August and immediately stopped taking it. Major league baseball offered Romero a deal; he could accept a 25-game suspension effective immediately or face a longer suspension in 2009 after going through arbitration. Romero chose not to accept the deal because in doing so he felt it would show that he was guilty and he would have missed the remainder of the 2008 postseason.

Phil Sheridan, of The Philadelphia Inquirer, is reporting Philadelphia Phillies RP J.C. Romero will be hit with a 50-game suspension on Tuesday, Jan. 6, effective with the start of the 2009 season. Romero is being suspended for 50 games and losing about $1.25 million in salary because, an arbitrator ruled, he was "negligent" in not knowing what was in a supplement purchased at a retail store in Cherry Hill, N.J.

J.C. Romero (elbow surgery) said Saturday that he intends to be at full strength for the start of spring training next season. "My goal is to be ready to go when spring training starts," said the lefty, "although I may go a little slower because I don't want to get ahead of myself." It's a tough proposition. Romero underwent elbow surgery just one week ago and was given a recovery time of five-to-six months. Factor in a few setbacks, and it seems doubtful he'll be able to reach his goal.
