The session went well enough that he's tentatively set to toss a simulated game Aug. 29 followed by a Minor League game several days later. Despite a 4.08 ERA, Kuroda has been quite useful considering he's sporting a savory 1.16 WHIP and a decent 6.4 K/9 rate. Owners looking for spot starts near the end of the year should keep their eye on the righty.

Kuroda made it through his most taxing workout since taking a line drive off the head on Aug. 16 by shagging balls in the outfield and working through his pitching motion on the bullpen mound, holding a towel instead of a ball. Manager Joe Torre made it clear Kuroda would need a pair of bullpen sessions before facing hitters in a simulated game. Ultimately, the tail end of the first week in September looks like a reasonable time for Kuroda to make his return.
Kuroda to throw bullpen Wednesday
Hiroki Kuroda is scheduled to throw his first bullpen session since his injury on Wednesday, according to MLB.com. Kruoda has been on the DL since being hit in the head with a line drive earlier this month.
Our View: Kuroda has been playing catch and working out over the last week or so, and the bullpen is the first big step in a return to the mound. He could throw a simulated game next week, and he could return to the rotation soon after if he doesn't have any setbacks.

The Associated Press reports Los Angeles Dodgers SP Jeff Weaver has been tapped as the emergency starter Thursday, Aug. 20, replacing SP Hiroki Kuroda (head).
Kuroda likely to go on 15-day DL
News: Dodgers SP Hiroki Kuroda probably will have to go on the 15-day DL while he recovers from a concussion, manager Joe Torre said Tuesday. Kuroda, who was hit in the head by a line drive in Arizona last weekend, had another CT scan and additional tests Tuesday while visiting Dr. Vernon Williams, a Los Angeles neurologist specializing in concussions. The Japanese pitcher felt about the same as he did Monday, when Dodgers trainer Stan Conte reported Kuroda still had mild headaches. "This is really going to be a day-to-day thing," Conte said. "This can clear up overnight, or it could linger. We're just going to have to wait day to day." Weaver will start Thursday
MLB.com reports that Jeff Weaver will start for the Dodgers on Thursday.
Our View: Weaver is taking Hiroki Kuroda's spot in the rotation. He will face off against the Cubs, which is why Joe Torre decided go with the right-hander, who's stuff matches up well against the Cubs' right-heavy lineup. If you need a spot starter, Weaver could be a nice option against the slumping Cubbies.
Kuroda could land on DL
According to the Associated Press, Dodgers starter Hiroki Kuroda is likely headed to the disabled list.
Our View: Kurodu took a line drive to the dome last weekend and is still suffering from concussion-related symptoms. He underwent additional tests and a CT scan and was sent home early from Dodger Stadium to rest on Tuesday. No word on when the move will be made, but it seems likely he'll be put on the shelf.
Dodgers looking at Padilla?
According to FOXSports.com, the Dodgers allegedly have some interest in right-hander Vicente Padilla.
Our View: Padilla is expected to clear waivers on Wednesday after the Rangers officially released him on Monday. The Dodgers need rotation help as they charge towards October and with Hiroki Kuroda's health in jeopardy after being hit in the head, Padilla looks an affordable, if not reliable, option. He is available for the prorated portion of the league minimum, and the Rangers will eat the rest of his salary.
Dodgers | Elbert could start Thursday
Dylan Hernandez, of the Los Angeles Times, reports Los Angeles Dodgers P Scott Elbert could be recalled to start Thursday, Aug. 20, in place of SP Hiroki Kuroda (concussion).
Dodgers | Kuroda to miss next start
The Associated Press reports Los Angeles Dodgers SP Hiroki Kuroda (head) will miss his next scheduled start while recovering from a mild concussion. However, the team is optimistic about his chances of a quick return. Kuroda will need full medical clearance before he can pitch again, and was not allowed to throw his usual bullpen session Monday, Aug. 17. He has been experiencing intermittent headaches and occasional dizziness, but manager Joe Torre said Kuroda seemed perfectly aware Monday. Kuroda will undergo further tests with a neurologist Tuesday, Aug. 18.

On Tuesday, Kuroda will see a neurologist that specializes in concussions. On Monday, Kuroda had an initial CT scan to make sure he wasn't bleeding. The scan came back negative. A series of other tests revealed better-than-expected news. Although it doesn't seem that the Dodgers will place Kuroda on the disabled list, it's hard to gauge when the right-hander will return to the mound. He's certainly not going to make his next scheduled start on Aug. 20, though. Scott Elbert will likely take the hill in that one.

Kuroda shrunk his ERA to 3.38 over his last five starts, but
Kuroda shrunk his ERA to 3.38 over his last five starts, but he has offered fantasy owners a solid package of benefits all season long. Kuroda is a decent source of strikeouts -- he has 62 in 83 1/3 innings -- while his pinpoint control has helped him issue just 14 free passes all season long. The result is a fine 1.19 WHIP, another nice fringe fantasy benefit from an unfairly undervalued pitcher. Kuroda will take his next turn on Aug. 15, against the light-hitting Diamondbacks in Arizona.
