Despite a 4.08 ERA, Kuroda has been quite useful considering he's sporting a savory 1.16 WHIP and a decent 6.4 K/9 rate. Kuroda made it through his most taxing workout since taking a line drive off the head on Aug. 16 by shagging balls in the outfield and working through his pitching motion on the bullpen mound, holding a towel instead of a ball. Manager Joe Torre made it clear Kuroda would need a pair of bullpen sessions before facing hitters in a simulated game. Ultimately, the tail end of the first week in September looks like a reasonable time for Kuroda to make his return.

He will face off against the Cubs, which is why Joe Torre decided go with the right-hander, who's stuff matches up well against the Cubs' right-heavy lineup. If you need a spot starter, Weaver could be a nice option against the slumping Cubbies.

Our View: Kurodu took a line drive to the dome last weekend and is still suffering from concussion-related symptoms. Our View: Padilla is expected to clear waivers on Wednesday after the Rangers officially released him on Monday. The Dodgers need rotation help as they charge towards October and with Hiroki Kuroda's health in jeopardy after being hit in the head, Padilla looks an affordable, if not reliable, option. He is available for the prorated portion of the league minimum, and the Rangers will eat the rest of his salary.

A series of other tests revealed better-than-expected news. Although it doesn't seem that the Dodgers will place Kuroda on the disabled list, it's hard to gauge when the right-hander will return to the mound. He's certainly not going to make his next scheduled start on Aug. 20, though. Scott Elbert will likely take the hill in that one.
