News: The Indians have placed All-Star outfielder Grady Sizemore on the 15-day disabled list with left elbow inflammation and called up utilityman Chris Gimenez from Triple-A Columbus. The Indians announced the moves before Sunday's 5-4 home win over the New York Yankees. He went 1-for-4, hitting his team-leading ninth homer Saturday night against the Yankees, but is hitting only .223 overall. "We couldn't take it any further," said manager Eric Wedge, who had tried to keep Sizemore's normally productive bat in the lineup by using him as a designated hitter. The two-time Gold Glove center field had played in the field only three times in his past 12 appearances, all in an interleague series in Cincinnati. "The first couple of days, it looked like Grady was getting better, then it leveled off. We didn't want to push it and hurt it even more," Wedge said. Wedge said an MRI exam showed no structural damage and that Sizemore would not swing a bat or do any throwing for two weeks. [...]

MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince reports the Cleveland Indians have recalled OF Chris Gimenez from Triple-A Columbus. The 26-year-old can play both corner outfield spots, which can help alleviate depth concerns with OF Grady Sizemore (elbow) on the disabled list. He can also serve as backup catcher for as long as C Victor Martinez (knee) is ailing. In 39 games for the Columbus Clippers, Gimenez made 24 starts at catcher, 11 in the outfield and three at first base. He said he has primarily been playing outfield recently but added he'd be doing everything in Cleveland.

Because of elbow soreness, which Sizemore recently said has bothered him all season, he has logged just three games in center field since May 16. Sizemore had been limited to DH duties because the elbow bothered him on throws from the outfield. The Indians hoped staying away from the field would allow the elbow to heal, but the DL move proves that plan did not work out. Sizemore, getting treatment on the elbow, was not available for comment Sunday morning. Sizemore is batting .223 with nine homers, 31 RBIs and a .726 OPS and had been dropped from the leadoff spot to No. 2 earlier this month.

Our View: Gimenez is a utility player, but he will have no fantasy value for the Indians at this time. He will not be seeing much playing time, so no need to even give him a look.

ESPN.com is reporting that the Indians have placed outfielder Grady Sizemore on the 15-day DL with left elbow inflammation. In the corresponding move, the team called up utilityman Chris Gimenez to replace Sizemore on the roster.

Our View: Not a complete shocker, but bad news for Sizemore owners. The timing of the move is a bit odd, especially since Grady hit his first home run in seven games yesterday. Hopefully the time off will let the elbow heal, but owners need to find a fill-in for the time being.

Status: D.L.. Out for the season
Grady Sizemore is near 100 percent rehabilitated from elbow and hernia surgery. The center-fielder is working out at the Indians' spring complex and should have no restrictions entering spring training. Sizemore battled injuries all year, finishing with a .788 OPS, his worst in full-time play. His line plus the injuries will ensure he drops down draft boards for 2010: don't let him get past you.
