Sheff relegated to pinch-hitting role indefinitely
Gary Sheffield will serve in the role of pinch-hitter indefinitely after aggravating his lower-back injury again on Friday, according to the New York Post. Sheffield has been dealing with the injury since last Tuesday.
Our View: Sheff will be coming off the bench for the rest of the season, although he could see a few starts here and there if his back improves. Don't expect him to do much over the last month of the season, and if you haven't done so already you should find another option.

Our View: Sheffield was escorted off the field by the team trainer, so it looks like an injury of some sort. We will keep you updated on his status when it is released.
Sheff triples, scores run in loss
Gary Sheffield led the way for the Mets' offense on Monday in their 6-2 loss to the rival Phillies. Sheffield went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored in the contest.
Our View: Amidst the drama that has taken over Sheffield, he managed to come out today and put a couple nice swings on the ball. His situation seems unlikely to be resolved any time soon, so expect him to be an inconsistent fantasy play for the rest of the season.
Mets | Sheffield does not start Sunday

Francoeur out of lineup Monday
Jeff Francoeur is not in the Mets' lineup for their Monday afternoon game against the Phillies. Gary Sheffield started in left in place of Francoeur, who is dealing with a thumb injury.

Sheff sits with "wrist injury"
Gary Sheffield did not start Sunday's game against the Phillies due to a right wrist injury suffered in the weight room, according to the New York Daily News. Sheffield did manage to pinch-hit in the eighth inning, and he flied out to left.
Our View: This injury sounds minor, but you have to wonder if there really is an injury at all. With all of the Sheff-Mets drama as of late, it seems more likely that the team is looking for an excuse to sit him. He is about as unstable a fantasy play as you can get right now, so if you have another option you should bump him in front of Sheff.

Sheff to stick it out with Mets
According to Bart Hubbuch on Twitter, the Mets have no intention of waiving or releasing outfielder Gary Sheffield.
Our View: Oh the drama. GM Omar Minaya says that he called the meeting with Sheff and that the outfielder never asked for an extension (contrary to yesterday's reports). Who knows who or what to believe in this situation, but it sounds like Sheff will stick with the Mets for the rest of the season and continue to get regular playing time. Start him if you've got him, a he's intonight's lineup.

Sheffield in lineup Friday
Gary Sheffield is in the Mets' lineup for their Friday night game against the Phillies. Sheffield was benched yesterday after threatening to leave the team if he didn't get a contract extension.
Our View: This is quite a surprise after the events over the past few days. One of the two sides must have buckled, and we will keep you updated on the situation. If you are a Sheff owner, it may not be time to give up just yet.
Mets | Sheffield didn't ask for extension

3 UP: SHEFFIELD, METS MISERY AND MILLEDGE
Yes, I am on Twitter.1.Here is my column on Gary Sheffield's latest bad act. Sheffield's request for a contract extension and his petulant behavior when the Mets refused not only shows how ungrateful he is, but also an incredible lack of smarts. Sheffield has one of the worst reputations in baseball. He is plutonium to most organizations, not to be touched under any conditions.

Sheff drama thickens
It has been revealed by the New York Post that the reason Gary Sheffield is not in the Mets lineup on Thursday night is that he asked the club for a contract extension, the club said no, and he then threatened to leave.
Our View: Just another selfish, foolish act by one of sports' biggest malcontents. It is unclear what is going to happen next between the two sides, but the Mets could release Sheffield. Maybe this time, no one will sign him.
SHEFF AND METS AT ODDS
By JOEL SHERMAN Gary Sheffield asked the Mets for a contract extension, the club rejected the oveture and now Sheffield has threatened to leave the team and head home, two sources told the Post. As of 6:30 p.m., one of the sources said, Mets officials and Sheffield were in discussions on how to move forward. There was a possibility that the Mets could release Sheffield. Sheffield had been part of the original lineup for Thursday night's game against the Braves. But Jerry Manuel said that Sheffield had pulled himself to clear his head.

Sheff to "clear his head"
Gary Sheffield has asked for the game off Thursday night so he can "clear his thoughts," according to the New York Post's Bart Hubhuch.
Our View: Does he mean his irrational fear that the Mets plan on "trading" him even though they could no longer get anything in return for him because he has already been pulled back from waivers (dumping his salary is not an issue, either). Sheff - still confounding after all these years.
Mets | Sheffield scratched Thursday
Newsday's David Lennon reports New York Mets OF Gary Sheffield was scratched from the lineup Thursday, Aug. 20. However, he said he is completely healthy.
Mets | Sheffield expects to be traded
Larry Brooks, of the New York Post, reports New York Mets OF Gary Sheffield said he does not expect to end the season with the team. "Based on what I know now, no, I do not think I will be here," Sheffield said. "But if I am sent to a team that I don't want to play for, I would go home." Sheffield has stated that he intends to play in 2010.
Sheff thinks Mets want to get rid of him
Gary Sheffield has told the New York Post that he does not envision himself finishing 2009 in a Mets uniform, and that he may retire if he is sent somewhere he does not want to play.
Our View: The Mets can no longer get anything in return for Sheffield, since they pulled him off of waivers last week, so Sheff being placed on waivers again, where he could be claimed for nothing, seems very unlikely. Still, Sheffield has been paranoid before, and he will surely be paranoid again.

Sheff has three-hit night
Gary Sheffield went 3-for-5 with a run scored and a pair of RBI in the Mets' 9-4 win over the Braves Tuesday.
Our View: Sheff is having a decent season, hitting .290 with 10 homers and 43 RBI, but is a tough fantasy play at this stage in his career due to injuries and the fact that he doesn't start every day. He's best if limited to a reserve fantasy role.
An important game for Sheffield, who hadn’t registered
An important game for Sheffield, who hadn’t registered an extra-base hit in the last eight tilts, going 5-for-20 over that stretch before busting out with the pair of doubles Tuesday. The elder statesman may have struggled to stay in the lineup at times, but when he’s healthy he can still destroy the ball, as evidenced by a .290 average and 43 RBIs in 87 affairs this season.

Mets | Manuel wants Sheffield back
The New York Post's Bart Hubbuch reports New York Mets manager Jerry Manuel said he'd love to have OF Gary Sheffield back in 2010. Sheffield will be a free agent after the season.
Manuel wants Sheffield back in 2010
According to Metsblog.com, Mets' manager Jerry Manuel told the media on Tuesday that he would like to see Gary Sheffield return to the team next season. Sheffield is hitting .283 with 10 home runs this season.
Our View: Sheff has been one of the Mets' best offensive players this season, but at age 40 you have to wonder if the team would actually consider bringing him back. He has been slowed by injury this season, and it would make more sense for the team to move forward with the young players they already have.

Sheff supposedly returning on Wednesday
The latest on Gary Sheffield has the left fielder and his creaky hamstring returning to the lineup on Wednesday, according to the New York Post's Bart Hubbuch.
Our View: Do yourself a favor: unless there are absolutely no alternatives available in your league, drop Sheff. He's more brittle than Samuel L. Jackson's character in "Unbreakable" at this point, and the hapless Mets medical staff has proven wholly incapable of getting him better quickly or accurately gauging when he might return. Save some face while there's still time.

Sheffield, who has been nursing a sore right hamstring, said
Sheffield, who has been nursing a sore right hamstring, said he was going to take fly balls and do a bit of running with the hope of possibly being a late addition to the lineup at Chase Field against the D-backs, but Manager Jerry Manuel opted to keep Sheff on the bench as a precaution. Sheffield, 40, hasn't played much since he left a game at Atlanta on July 17 with a cramp in his right hamstring. He has since endured a DL stint and missed all four games of the just-concluded series in San Diego. His .286-10-38 line (in just 79 games) suggests that he can still help NL-only owners, although that obviously only holds true if he's actually playing.

Our View: Here we go again. The Mets and lingering injuries almost always equal a trip to the disabled list, so don't plan on seeing Sheff for the rest of the weekend, at least.
Mets | Sheff takes BP
The Associated Press reports New York Mets OF Gary Sheffield (hamstring) took batting practice Thursday, Aug. 6, but was held out of the lineup.

Sheff to miss a couple games
Updating a previous report, Gary Sheffield pulled himself out of Wednesday's game as a precautionary measure according to the New York Daily News.
Our View: It doesn't look like Sheff is heading to the disabled list. He'll likely miss a couple game and could get into the second half of the Padres series this weekend. Consider him day-to-day right now, but don't be surprised if this worsens. It is the Mets we're talking about here.

Sheffield leaves due to hammy again
News: Left fielder Gary Sheffield, just off the DL last weekend, aggravated a hamstring injury while rounding first base after a sixth-inning hit Wednesday and came out of the game to avoid a setback. "Not bad at all," Sheffield said. "Now we have to get to a point where we have to check my electrolytes and find out really why I'm cramping up like this." [...]

Sheffield pulls up lame
Gary Sheffield was removed from the Mets game on Wednesday with an apparent hamstring injury as he was trying to stretch a single into a double.
Our View: Flipping ridiculous. Mets' players are dropping faster than the Dow Jones during a run on stocks. The Mets made it all of an hour between injuries as Jon Niese was injured earlier in the game. Sheffield has had troubles with his legs all season, so this is certainly a potentially scary development for Sheffield owners.

Sheff knocks two hits for Mets in loss
Gary Sheffield went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and two RBI in the Mets' 12-7 loss to the Cardinals on Tuesday. Sheffield is hitting .286 on the season.
Our View: This was a nice performance from a guy who has been hurt lately, but Sheff remians one of the top offensive options for the injury-depleted Mets. With much of the offensive power on the DL, Sheffield should continue to be a nice fantasy option as long as he stays healthy.

A nice effort from Sheffield, who is 3-for-10 with a pair of doubles in three games since returning from a strained right hamstring. Chances are he wasnÂ’t dropped during his brief stint away, but if he happens to be available in any format, there are definitely owners who could use his .286 average and 10 homers.

New York manager Jerry Manuel said Sheffield would be his top pinch hitter off the bench and there was a good chance he would start in the series finale Monday night. Sheffield, who was hitting .286 with 10 homers before landing on the DL July 25 with a strained right hamstring, was not in the starting lineup against the D-backs on Sunday (possibly because of the wet and rainy conditions in New York), but the veteran should work his way back into the lineup sooner rather than later, giving the Mets some needed pop in the middle of the order. Sheffield's activation should significantly cut into Cory Sullivan's at-bats.

Sheffield to be activated from DL Sunday
Gary Sheffield (hamstring) will be activated from the DL by the Mets today, according to MetsBlog.com.
Our View: Sheffield should resume his everyday role in left field. He's hitting .286 with 10 home runs in 210 at-bats this season, making him worthy of ownership in nearly all leagues, so think about snatching him up if he's been dropped over his DL stint.

Gary Sheffield won't be activated from the DL until Sunday, according to Bart Hubbuch's (New York Post) twitter page. He has been recovering from a strained hamstring.
