This was Sheffield's first multi-RBI game with the Mets this season, as the 21-year-veteran has gotten off to a painfully slow start with his new ball club (.167 average and 3 XBHs). With Daniel Murphy struggling defensively in left, Sheff should be able to work his way into the outfield mix for the time being, but is not a good fantasy bet at this point in his career.

The plan had been for Sheff to start on Sunday, but Johan Santana's pending start that day persuaded manager Jerry Manuel to value defense more than usual. Considering Sheffield hasn't played outfield very much the past couple years, Manuel would rather start Sheffield later in the week when offense is at more of a premium. After the Monday home opener vs. the Padres, the Mets have Tuesday off, making Wednesday an ideal day for Sheffield to make his Mets debut.
Mets | Sheffield could start in right field Wednesday
Updating previous reports, New York Mets manager Jerry Manuel said it is unlikely that OF Gary Sheffield will start in right field Sunday, April 12, against the Florida Marlins, according to Brian Costa of The Newark Star-Ledger. SP Johan Santana is scheduled to pitch in that game, and Manuel said he would rather err offensively than defensively when Santana pitches, meaning the team feels OF Ryan Church's glove would be of more value than Sheffield's bat. Sheffield is more likely to see his first start in the field Wednesday, April 15, against the San Diego Padres.

Mets | Sheffield not ready to play outfield
Adam Rubin, of the New York Daily News, reports New York Mets OF Gary Sheffield said that he is not ready to play the outfield in a game after participating in a 20-minute session in the outfield Wednesday, April 8. Sheffield said he would be fine serving as a pinch-hitter while playing the outfield sporadically this year. He stated that there is no way he could play around 130 games in the outfield this season. There is a slim chance that he will be in right field for the game Sunday, April 12, according to manager Jerry Manuel.

Gary Sheffield plans to go for No. 500 with the New York Mets.
News: Gary Sheffield plans to go for No. 500 with the New York Mets. One home run shy of the milestone, Sheffield reached a contract agreement with New York on Friday, three days after he was released by the Detroit Tigers in a surprising move. Just hours before opening their beaming new ballpark Friday night with an exhibition game against Boston, the Mets made another splash by acquiring the outspoken Sheffield. He is expected to be in New York on Saturday and the deal is contingent on him passing a physical, general manager Omar Minaya said. "Gary gives us another element in the lineup and he gives us a different intensity, just because of the competitive guy that he is," Minaya said at Citi Field. The 40-year-old slugger provides the Mets with a right-handed power bat, something they need to help balance the batting order. But his role on the team will be tricky: New York was already set at the corner outfield spots with Ryan Church in right and Daniel Murphy in left - both left-handed hitters. [...]

Sheffield, who had also drawn interest from the Phillies and Reds, was presumed to prefer the Mets because they would give him more playing time as an alternative to Ryan Church in right field and Daniel Murphy in left. Gary Sheffield has reportedly agreed to a deal with the Mets, according to Sports Illustrated. Terms were not disclosed.

Gary Sheffield has reportedly agreed to a deal with the Mets, according to Sports Illustrated. Terms were not disclosed.
Our View: Sheffield will serve in a platoon role in the outfield, and should see enough action to be useful for NL-only leagues. He is one homer shy of 500, and will reach the milestone with the Mets.

The Post quotes a source close to the on-going negotiations as saying, "Unless something drastic happens, he is a Met. Someone would have to offer him a second year, and I just don't see that happening." Sheffield, who has also drawn interest from the Phillies and Reds, is presumed to prefer the Mets because they would give him more playing time as an alternative to Ryan Church in right field and Daniel Murphy in left. The Tigers released Sheffield despite one year at $14 million remaining on his contract. A team that signs Sheffield would only have to pay the Major League minimum of $400,000, with Detroit picking up the remainder of his salary. Sheffield cleared waivers on Thursday and is sitting on 499 career home runs.

Sheffield close to deal with Mets
The Mets are close to signing free agent outfielder Gary Sheffield. "Unless something drastic happens, he is a Met," a source informs the New York Post.
Our View: Sheffield would give the Mets a right-handed complement to outfielders Ryan Church and Daniel Murphy, although that's supposedly what Fernando Tatis does. The Mets might also see if he's comfortable with backup work at first base. Sheffield won't play every day and won't have much upside, but he is worth a flyer in NL-only formats, provided he does sign with the Mets.

Braves not interested in Sheffield
The Braves are not interested in bringing back Gary Sheffield following his release by Detroit, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
Our View: Sheffield served with Atlanta in 2002 and 2003, swatting 64 homers over the span, but the Braves do not have room for him, and already upgraded their outfield with Garret Anderson. The Phillies are still in the running for Sheffield, and the Mets may garner interest as well. He was scheduled to meet with the Reds on Thursday.

News: The Cincinnati Reds have an interest in free agent Gary Sheffield, but only if he will accept a limited role. Manager Dusty Baker says Thursday that he plans to talk to Sheffield, whom he has known for many years. Baker acknowledged the 40-year-old outfielder would have to accept a limited role with the Reds, who are set in the outfield. Reds | Want Sheffield in limited role

Sheffield to meet with Reds
Reds manager Dusty Baker and general manager Walt Jocketty were scheduled to meet with Gary Sheffield Thursday once the veteran officially clears waivers, according to MLB.com. "I'm sure he has some offers," Baker said. "I asked Walt for permission to make the call. I made the call, then Walt talked to [Reds president and CEO Bob] Castelllini. I talked to Jim Leyland [Wednesday] night, just to see, because he hadn't played the outfield in a long time."
Our View: This would be an interesting fit if the Reds decide that Sheff still has the ability to play the outfield, as he could get significant playing time in left field. He could be back on the fantasy radar if playing in that ballpark.
Baker told a Cincinnati Enquirer columnist P that he would meet
Baker told a Cincinnati Enquirer columnist P that he would meet with Sheffield, who was released by the Tigers on Tuesday March 30, on Thursday. Stay tuned, as Sheffield in Cincinnati would put a serious dent in Chris Dickerson's fantasy value.
Reds interested in Sheffield
The Reds are one of the three teams interested in Gary Sheffield, according to the Dayton Daily News.
Our View: The club likes Sheffield as he would add a big right-handed bat to their offense. He is one homer shy of 500 for his career, and it would not take long for him to reach the milestone while playing his home games at the Great American Ballpark.

MLB | Sheffield being pursued by three teams
Todd Zolecki, of MLB.com, reports three teams are currently interested in free-agent OF Gary Sheffield (Tigers), according to manager Jim Leyland. One of the teams interested is the Philadelphia Phillies.
Sheffield drawing interest
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Gary Sheffield is drawing interest from three different teams.
Our View: The Phillies have already spoken with his agent, but Sheffield is looking for a bigger role than they have available. He has recently expressed his desire to play for the Rays, as he is from the Tampa area.
Thames named Tigers' DH
Following the release of Gary Sheffield, Marcus Thames will get the chance to be the Tigers full-time DH in 2009, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Our View: Thames has a reputation of struggling against right-handed pitchers, but he showed some improvement last season. Over the last three seasons, he has homered once in every 13.5 at-bats, meaning he should certainly be considered by fantasy owners looking to amp up their home run total. However, he was held to a .241 batting average last season.
Sheffield wants to land with Rays
The Detroit Free Press reports that Gary Sheffield hopes to sign with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Our View: Sheff is from the Tampa area, and he would compete with Gabe Gross, Gabe Kapler, and Matt Joyce for a starting outfield position. Sheffield also has been linked to the Phillies, but it is believed that he wants an everyday job.
