The Giants were in desperate need of a second baseman after trying their luck with Emmanuel Burriss, Juan Uribe, Matt Downs and Eugenio Velez. In Sanchez, they got themselves a three-time All-Star who's in the midst of another rock-solid campaign, hitting .296 with six homers, 34 RBIs, five stolen bases and 45 runs scored with the lowly Pirates. The only questionable aspect of the trade is health-related. Sanchez, who is mired in an 0-for-17 slump, missed his third straight game Wednesday because of a sore left knee. The injury clearly didn't scare off the Giants, who parted ways with one of their top pitching prospects in Tim Alderson, who compiled a 6-1 record and a 3.47 ERA in 13 starts for Double-A Connecticut this season. In 72 2/3 innings, he has issued just 14 walks against 46 strikeouts, and he figures to join the Pirates rotation sometime in 2010. The trade comes hours after Pittsburgh shipped its other middle infielder -- Jack Wilson -- to Seattle, which creates vacancies at second and shortstop that will likely be filled by Ramon Vazquez and the newly acquired Ronny Cedeno, respectively.

As it turned out, it was empty speculation, for now at least, as Sanchez confirmed that his tender left knee is keeping him out of the lineup Tuesday and almost surely on Wednesday, too. Wilson, Russell said, was just getting a scheduled day off to rest. The fact that both middle infielders sat in the dugout at AT&T Park on Tuesday, though, doesn't mean that both are sure to be around for the rest of the week. The Twins and particularly the Giants are known to have been engaged in talks with the Pirates about Sanchez. For Minnesota, which is also looking for some relief help, it's likely that John Grabow has also been a point of interest. The Giants -- who have some Minor League depth -- seem to be the best possible trade partner for Sanchez, though much can change in the next three days.

Our View: The Twins' interest in the Pirates dynamic infield duo appears to be cooling as they zero in on talks with the A's about Orlando Cabrera. Giants | Talking about two Bucs
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Dejan Kovacevic reports the San Francisco Giants have had talks with the Pittsburgh Pirates about 2B Freddy Sanchez, and to a lesser extent, 1B Adam LaRoche. The Giants have had a scout following Sanchez, a source confirmed, and their interest in LaRoche goes back several months. Their preference at first base, though, is for a right-handed bat.

Our View: Sanchez is batting .316 on the season, and was just named to his third All-Star team on Sunday. He has been battling back issues, however, and missed all three Pirates games over the weekend, and is expected to not be able to play Monday night, either. He is set to return Tuesday, though. Whenever he does, he will likely keep hitting.

Our View: The Pirates have demonstrated that they are not shy about trading away their players, and Capps could improve the Twins' bullpen. A move like that would kill his fantasy value, so Capps' owners should monitor him until the trade deadline.
