Bowker recalled by Giants
John Bowker has been recalled by the Giants from Triple-A Fresno, according to the Associated Press.
Our View: Bowker may not be with the Giants long, as the club needs to free up a roster spot to make room for Freddy Sanchez. Bowker is only worth a look for the deepest of fantasy leagues.

Skipper Bruce Bochy is hopeful that Freddy Sanchez could make his debut with the Giants Saturday or Sunday when they battle the Phillies, according to MLB.com. He is recovering from a left knee injury.

The Giants were in desperate need of a second baseman after
The Giants were in desperate need of a second baseman after trying their luck with Emmanuel Burriss, Juan Uribe, Matt Downs and Eugenio Velez. In Sanchez, they got themselves a three-time All-Star who's in the midst of another rock-solid campaign, hitting .296 with six homers, 34 RBIs, five stolen bases and 45 runs scored with the lowly Pirates. The only questionable aspect of the trade is health-related. Sanchez, who is mired in an 0-for-17 slump, missed his third straight game Wednesday because of a sore left knee. The injury clearly didn't scare off the Giants, who parted ways with one of their top pitching prospects in Tim Alderson, who compiled a 6-1 record and a 3.47 ERA in 13 starts for Double-A Connecticut this season. In 72 2/3 innings, he has issued just 14 walks against 46 strikeouts, and he figures to join the Pirates rotation sometime in 2010. The trade comes hours after Pittsburgh shipped its other middle infielder -- Jack Wilson -- to Seattle, which creates vacancies at second and shortstop that will likely be filled by Ramon Vazquez and the newly acquired Ronny Cedeno, respectively.

Prospect Alderson sent to Pitt for Sanchez
Top prospect Tim Alderson has been traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Freddy Sanchez, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Dejan Kovacevic.
Our View: Alderson is still raw, but has already shown great control in the minors, walking very few batters while striking out a fair amount. It will be a while before he is in the major leagues, but it seems very likely that he indeed will be some day.
It's official: Sanchez to SF
As has been widely rumored to happen all day, the Pirates have traded second basemen Freddy Sanchez to the San Francisco Giants, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Dejan Kovacevic.
Our View: In return, they are getting heralded starting pitching prospect Tim Alderson. The move caps a day that also saw the Bucs trade away Sanchez's long-time double play partner, Jack Wilson, and head-case starting pitcher Ian Snell to the Mariners. The 17-year rebuilding process rolls on.

Winn plays hero in tenth inning
Randy Winn's tenth inning single provided the only run of the game on Wednesday, as the Giants outlasted the Pirates 1-0 in ten innings.
Our View: Yikes. One run against the Pirates with Matt Cain going. Could be the final straw that compels to the Giants to get Pittsburgh's Freddy Sanchez.
San Francisco already did an initial MRI on Sanchez's knee on
San Francisco already did an initial MRI on Sanchez's knee on Monday, July 27, but wanted to take another look before agreeing to any deal, the source added. The source said that if the Giants are content with the medical reports that the framework of a deal is already in place that would send Sanchez to San Francisco and a package of Minor Leaguers to Pittsburgh. Pirates general manager Neal Huntington has not ruled out dealing second baseman Sanchez before Friday's non-waiver trade deadline even though the Pirates already traded away their other middle infielder -- Jack Wilson -- early on Wednesday.

The Giants want to make sure Sanchez's knee is fine before making a deal for him. Sources say a framework for a deal is already in place and the Giants could pull the trigger on a trade if they are content with his health.
Giants | Close to acquiring F. Sanchez
Vincent Bonsignore, of the Los Angeles Daily News, reports the San Francisco Giants are close to acquiring 2B Freddy Sanchez from the Pittsburgh Pirates, according to the New York Post's Joel Sherman. OF John Bowker, 2B Kevin Frandsen and 1B Jesus Guzman are all being discussed as players that could be part of the deal, according to SI.com's Jon Heyman.
Sanchez staying put for now
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates have squashed the rumor that Freddy Sanchez is headed to the Giants. The team reports that there is no deal in place for the second baseman.
Our View: There was apparently a deal in the making between the two clubs, but an MRI on Jonathan Sanchez's knee revealed concerns and the Giants backed out. That doesn't mean a new deal won't get done, or even that the two teams won't revisit the original framework, but as of right now nothing is on the table.

Sanchez to Giants?

As it turned out, it was empty speculation, for now at least, as Sanchez confirmed that his tender left knee is keeping him out of the lineup Tuesday and almost surely on Wednesday, too. Wilson, Russell said, was just getting a scheduled day off to rest. The fact that both middle infielders sat in the dugout at AT&T Park on Tuesday, though, doesn't mean that both are sure to be around for the rest of the week. The Twins and particularly the Giants are known to have been engaged in talks with the Pirates about Sanchez. For Minnesota, which is also looking for some relief help, it's likely that John Grabow has also been a point of interest. The Giants -- who have some Minor League depth -- seem to be the best possible trade partner for Sanchez, though much can change in the next three days.

Wilson, Sanchez being scouted
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, scouts from both the Twins and Red Sox were scouting Pirates players over the weekend, particularly Jack Wilson and Freddy Sanchez.
Our View: The Twins' interest in the Pirates dynamic infield duo appears to be cooling as they zero in on talks with the A's about Orlando Cabrera. The level of Red Sox interest is not known, but the club is beginning to appear desperate, and could pull the trigger on a number of deals in the coming days. Both Wilson and Sanchez have battled injury lately, but have solid pedigrees of production that will still likely entice the Sox and other desperate teams.
Sanchez K's three times as Bucs get crushed
Freddy Sanchez went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts on Sunday, dropping his average to a season low .296.
Our View: As trade rumors about him have swirled, Sanchez has slumped mightily, seeing his average fall from .318 on July 18 to its current .296. He has also battled a bad back, and could be a question mark going forward.

Pirates | Still listening to offers for four players
Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi, of FOXSports.com, report the Pittsburgh Pirates are still listening to offers for 2B Freddy Sanchez, SS Jack Wilson, RP John Grabow and RP Matt Capps.
On Sunday, Pirates general manager Neal Huntington expressed
On Sunday, Pirates general manager Neal Huntington expressed little optimism that an agreement would be reached with either player. "The response is such that they don't even feel we are in the same ballpark because they feel like years, dollars, the foundation is so far off their expectations that it's not worth countering," Huntington said. Both middle infielders, however, adamantly stated that that was not the case. "I did not know that it was negotiable," Sanchez said. "I was under the assumption that it was a take-it-or-leave-it deal and that there was going to be no wiggle room." With contract talks hitting a snag, the likelihood of Wilson and/or Sanchez getting dealt before the July 31 Trade Deadline is growing stronger.
Sanchez, Wilson open to staying with Bucs
On Monday, Freddy Sanchez and Jack Wilson wanted to make it clear that despite not accepting the Pirates' initial contract extensions, both remain willing to continue negotiations with the club.
Pirates | Wilson, Sanchez open to negotiating
MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch posted on her Twitter page that Pittsburgh Pirates 2Bs Jack Wilson and Freddy Sanchez are both open to negotiating with the team. They were unaware that a counter offer was an option.
Pirates | Cut off contract talks with Wilson, Sanchez
The Associated Press reports the Pittsburgh Pirates cut off contract talks with SS Jack Wilson and 2B Freddy Sanchez after the players didn't respond to multiyear offers. Discussions could resume if the players' agents make counter proposals, but Pirates general manager Neal Huntington cautioned the team will not move far off the two-year offers made last week. The players believe the money is so below market value, there is no reason to negotiate unless the Pirates substantially upgrade the offer. Sanchez was offered $10 million over two seasons, a deal contingent upon him shelving the $8.4 million he will be owed in 2010 if he makes 600 plate appearances this season. Wilson was offered $8 million over two years - or less than his club option of $8.4 million for next season alone.

Contract decisions loom for Sanchez, Wilson
If long-time friends Jack Wilson and Freddy Sanchez hope to remain the Pirates' double play duo beyond this season -- and perhaps beyond this month -- they'll have to make some big financial decisions, and soon.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported late Thursday night that
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported late Thursday night that the club has gone to both of their star middle infielders about long-term deals to keep them in Pittsburgh, knowing that to sign one, they'd likely have to sign both because the two are best friends. The Post-Gazette story said Pirates GM Neal Huntington wouldn't comment directly on the contract status of either player, but made it clear that the club has to look at all options concerning their top two position players. "Obviously, the easiest thing would be to keep them here," Huntington said. "If we can't do that and we get the right trade, it's something we have to do."

Pirates | Approached Wilson, Sanchez about extensions
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Dejan Kovacevic reports the Pittsburgh Pirates have approached SS Jack Wilson and 2B Freddy Sanchez about multiyear extensions. If one player does not sign, the other probably will not, either. Wilson and Sanchez are best friends to the point of being virtually inseparable, on and off the field.

According to the Post-Gazette, the Pirates have approached both
According to the Post-Gazette, the Pirates have approached both Jack Wilson and Freddy Sanchez about multiyear extensions. Both are playing out the final guaranteed years of their deals, with Sanchez owed $8 million and Wilson $8. [...]
Twins | Unlikely to get Sanchez
The Minneapolis Star Tribune's La Velle E. Neal III reports the Minnesota Twins are unlikely to acquire Pittsburgh Pirates 2B Freddy Sanchez.
Pirates | Nothing looming with Sanchez
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Dejan Kovacevic reports the Pittsburgh Pirates have no active trade talks about 2B Freddy Sanchez.
Pitt not actively shopping Sanchez
The Pirates claim they are not actively trying to trade infielder Freddy Sanchez, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Our View: This contradicts just about every report out there, but there is a possibility it could be true. The team, however, does admit that other clubs have approached them about Sanchez, and has not said he will not be traded. The smart money is still on him leaving Pittsburgh, though any trade shouldn't alter his fantasy value too much. He is an acceptable choice at second base in most formats.
Sanchez goes 2-for-4
Freddy Sanchez was 2-for-4 with a single, a double and an RBI in the Pirates' 5-2 loss on Sunday.
Our View: Sanchez has been one of the few bright spots for the Buccos offensively this season. The Pirate hit machine is batting .333 in July and has his average up to .316 on the season.

Cruz recalled by Pirates
As expected, Luis Cruz has been recalled from the minors by the Pirates, according to TSN.
Our View: Cruz is a career .232 hitter with no power, and should not hold much fantasy value while providing depth in the Pirates' middle infield while Freddy Sanchez nurses his back ailment.

Pirates | F. Sanchez trade not imminent
Dejan Kovacevic, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports a trade for Pittsburgh Pirates 2B Freddy Sanchez does not appear to be imminent, according to multiple sources. Apparently there are as many as five teams interested in him.
Giants | Sanchez for Sanchez deal in the works?
Dejan Kovacevic, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports the San Francisco Giants would apparently be willing to move SP Jonathan Sanchez to the Pittsburgh Pirates for 2B Freddy Sanchez. However, Jonathan alone would not be enough to complete the deal.
Twins | Still interested in Sanchez
FOXSports.com's Jon Paul Morosi reports the Minnesota Twins remain interested in Pittsburgh Pirates 2B Freddy Sanchez.
Sanchez deal not imminent
While the Pirates are indeed "pushing hard" to trade Freddy Sanchez, no deal is imminent, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Our View: The Rockies, Giants and Twins are believed to be three of the teams most interested in Sanchez and his .316 average. His value could be limited, however, by his balky back and a clause in his contract (600 plate appearances in 2009) that would automatically trigger an $8 million 2010 option. Stay tuned.
Twins eyeing Pirates
The Twins are interested in multiple Pittsburgh Pirates, including Freddy Sanchez, Matt Capps and John Grabow, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.
Our View: The Twins are only four games behind the Tigers in the American League Central, but are just 43-43. Any move would likely make a huge difference in their super tight division race.
One Sanchez for another possible
The Giants would be willing to part with Jonathan Sanchez in a deal for the Pirates Freddy Sanchez, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Our View: Sanchez has pitched his way out of the Giants rotation this season, and could benefit from a change of scenery. If the Giants could convince the Pirates he's worth taking a risk on, they would probably unload him in a heartbeat for Freddy, as their offense is still one of the most stagnant in baseball. Should this trade happen, and Jonathan get inserted into the Pirates rotation, he would not be worth an own until he could prove that he has ironed out the issues that have caused his ERA to balloon to 5.30 this season.
Cruz to be called up
The Pirates are expected to promote Luis Cruz on Friday as insurance for Freddy Sanchez, who has been bothered by a sore back, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Our View: No corresponding roster move has been announced. Cruz is not likely to see much playing time, and is not worth an add in any format.
Sanchez deal not imminent

If the Giants could convince the Pirates he's worth taking a risk on, they would probably unload him in a heartbeat for Freddy, as their offense is still one of the most stagnant in baseball.
Pirates anxious to unload LaRoche
Like they are with Freddy Sanchez, the Pirates are "pushing hard" to trade Adam LaRoche, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Our View: This is not surprising in the slightest, but there is apparently little interest in the free agent to be and the 2009 money remaining on his $7 million deal. He is hitting just .259 in 2009, but does have 12 home runs. If he is dealt, it will likely be closer to the deadline when teams are more desperate.
Report: Betancourt to be dealt soon
Yuniesky Betancourt is close to being traded, according to the Seattle Times.
Our View: No concrete scenarios are mentioned in the article, but it does say the Mariners have interest in both Freddy Sanchez and Jack Wilson on the Pirates. Betancourt is batting .250 in 63 games in 2009.
