Dodgers manager Joe Torre said Eric Milton will remain the club's fifth starter moving forward, but that because of the schedule, the team will need just four starters for the next few weeks.
Analysis: The Dodgers have Thursday and Monday off, so Milton won't start again until July 11 at Milwaukee. The veteran southpaw last took the hill against the Mariners on June 27, allowing four earned runs on seven hits over five innings; it was his first start since June 5, as he was previously on the DL with a strained back. For the time being, Milton will assume a new role as the Dodgers' long reliever.

Dodgers transferred LHP Eric Milton to the 60-day disabled list. Milton underwent a successful microdiskectomy on his lower back last Tuesday. He won't be able to resume baseball-related activities for at least another two months, but should be ready by spring training of 2010. Milton was a nice comeback story for the Dodgers this season, going 2-1 with a 3.80 ERA and 20/6 K/BB ratio in 23 2/3 innings, spanning five starts.
