News: Six-time Gold Glove third baseman Eric Chavez needed another shoulder operation after having both shoulders surgically repaired last year along with his back. He is rehabilitating in the Phoenix area. "We'd love to be optimistic about Eric," assistant GM David Forst said. "Certainly having him and Mark (Ellis) in place at the start of the season would be great. We're looking forward to having Mark the next three years, not necessarily opening day. Eric Chavez is in favor of Oakland bringing back slugger Jason Giambi, according to the SF Chronicle. Chavez said, "I think it's a great fit. I don't know if it will happen or not, and I don't know what the shape of the team will be, but Jason has had productive seasons in New York and there's no doubt he could still be a good hitter. And he'd be a big hit in the clubhouse. Every time I watch him, it seems like he comes up with a big hit or a home run."Giambi only hit .247 with the Yankees this season, but crushed 32 homers (over 145 games). Giambi is expected to be a free agent after the World Series, and GM Billy Beane previously stated that he intends to add a bat in the off-season.

Eric Chavez stated that rehab from his most recent shoulder surgery is going well, according to the SF Chronicle. He said, "It was a little slow at first, but the past two weeks, I've made huge progress. By the end of December, I'll be feeling about 100 percent."The A's remain optimistic he will be able to return to his post at third base next season, but will remain an injury risk as a fantasy prospect.

Status: D.L.. Out for the season
Eric Chavez will attempt to return to play third base for the A's next spring training. "I'll try to get in great shape, roll the dice and see what happens," Chavez said. He underwent a second microdiscectomy on his back in June. There's no guarantee that he'll ever be a major contributor again.
