Eric Chavez and the Athletics still are holding on to hope that he will be able to return from multiple surgeries this year to play third base next season, according to The Mercury News. "I'm optimistic, given the surgical report, that he'll be back and be good," GM Billy Beane said. "And I know he's really motivated."According to the reports that we have received so far, this seems like wishful thinking. At this point, what we are really hoping to hear is that Chavez is healthy and can drive the ball at the plate, even if he ends up having to DH next season. He remains a huge risk heading into 2009.

Status: D.L.. Out for the season
Eric Chavez will attempt to return to play third base for the A's next spring training. "I'll try to get in great shape, roll the dice and see what happens," Chavez said. He underwent a second microdiscectomy on his back in June. There's no guarantee that he'll ever be a major contributor again.
