Updating previous reports, Athletics.MLB.com's Jane Lee reports Oakland Athletics 3B Eric Chavez (shoulder) underwent a two-hour-plus surgery on his right shoulder Wednesday, Aug. 13, and will be out six months. Team doctors John Frazier and Thomas Peatman performed an anterior labral repair and a lesion repair, along with a biceps tendon transposition.

Team doctors John Frazier and Thomas Peatman performed an anterior labral repair and a lesion repair, along with a biceps tendon transposition. Wednesday's news proved to be rather encouraging considering Chavez mentioned a couple weeks ago that his labrum was possibly too damaged to repair, adding it could potentially end his career. The 30-year-old had been on the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation since July 2 and had been lightly rehabbing the injury until those efforts were completely shut down after surgery was scheduled.

Status: D.L.. Out for the season
Eric Chavez will attempt to return to play third base for the A's next spring training. "I'll try to get in great shape, roll the dice and see what happens," Chavez said. He underwent a second microdiscectomy on his back in June. There's no guarantee that he'll ever be a major contributor again.
