The San Francisco Chronicle reports that third baseman Eric Chavez's season ending surgery went well and he should be ready to start spring training in 2010.
Our View: This is Chavez's second surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back. His season is obviously over, but the procedure likely saved his career.

The Associated Press reports Oakland Athletics 3B Eric Chavez (back) had back surgery Tuesday, June 23, a season-ending procedure he hopes will salvage his career. Chavez had the operation performed by Dr. Robert Watkins in Los Angeles. It was the second back surgery for Chavez and his fifth operation overall since Sept. 5, 2007. The team hopes he will be ready to return by spring training next year.

Status: D.L.. Out for the season
Eric Chavez will attempt to return to play third base for the A's next spring training. "I'll try to get in great shape, roll the dice and see what happens," Chavez said. He underwent a second microdiscectomy on his back in June. There's no guarantee that he'll ever be a major contributor again.
