Our View: Chavez is worth consideration as a flier for AL-only leagues, and should be drafted as a backup to be safe. He is only 3-for-17 this spring.

He has not seen much work this spring and he will have to avoid any setbacks if he is to be on the lineup card for the first game. Regardless, Chavez should not be selected without ample insurance at the hot corner.

MLB.com reports that Eric Chavez (shoulder) took batting practice on Sunday, and attempted to swing at full strength. He has yet to play third base this spring and he seems doubtful to be rady by opening day.
Our View: Chavez has been nothing but hurt for the better part of the past two seasons. In 2006, his last full season, he hit just .241 and was not a very effective fantasy option. We'd love to see him come back and make an impact, but it still seems very optimistic.

Manager Bob Geren said the Nomar Garciaparra will play "quite a bit" at third base this season, regardless of Eric Chavez's health, and will also see time at shortstop, first base and designated hitter, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
Our View: While he may or may not be in the starting lineup Opening Day, it looks like Garciaparra's versatility will allow him to play much more than the typical reserve, which could give him nice value as a late-round sleeper in AL-only drafts. As always, he'll have to stay healthy if he wants to provide any value, something he's had a very tough time with throughout his career.

Eric Chavez is apparently ahead of schedule and has been testing out his surgically repaired shoulder during fielding drills, according to the SF Chronicle. Chavez didn't push it too hard, but the treatment he's been given seems to be working so far.
Our View: Chavez has had some decent fantasy seasons, but never really became what people thought he would. In a career riddled with injuries and inconsistencies, he has spurned many a fantasy owner. If he does eventually get a clean bill of health this year he could have some value, especially in AL-only leagues.

Eric Chavez will attempt to return to play third base for the A's next spring training. "I'll try to get in great shape, roll the dice and see what happens," Chavez said. He underwent a second microdiscectomy on his back in June. There's no guarantee that he'll ever be a major contributor again.
