Mientkiewicz might be a long shot to make the club with Blake DeWitt, Mark Loretta, Juan Castro and Tony Abreu also in camp and capable of the same roles as him. Mientkiewicz played for Dodgers manager Joe Torre with the Yankees in 2007. "He's a good team guy, and I told him if he gets a guaranteed contract to take it, and if not, we'll give him a chance to play," said Torre. "He's versatile; he'll put on the catcher's gear if you ask.

News: Doug Mientkiewicz and the Dodgers agreed to a minor league contract Thursday. The 34-year-old Mientkiewicz, who has played for six major league teams during his 11-year career, won a Gold Glove as Minnesota's first baseman in 2001. His .996 career fielding percentage in 955 games is tops among active first basemen. Mientkiewicz has played in the postseason four times. One highlight was when he took Keith Foulke's toss to first base to make the game-ending putout against St. Louis in 2004 that gave the Boston Red Sox their first World Series title in 86 years. He had come to Boston in a four-team deal before the July 31 trade deadline. He also has played for the New York Mets (2005), Kansas City (2006) and New York Yankees (2007), when current Dodgers manager Joe Torre was in New York. [...]
