Papi's back, and Red Sox will take it
It has been a season of extremes for David Ortiz. First, the epic slump that seemed like it would never end. And now, the power surge that has brought the swagger back in Big Papi.

Big Papi continues power surge
David Ortiz went 1-for-3 with a solo homer off Jair Jurrjens in tonight's 4-1 win at Atlanta.
Our View: Ortiz continues his power surge, as he crushed a homer in three of his last four games, and has seven this month. He has six RBI over his last five outings as well.

Lowell out again
Mike Lowell is not in the Red Sox' lineup again on Friday, according to the Twitter page of Boston Globe writer Amalie Benjamin. David Ortiz will once again be at first while Kevin Youkilis shifts to third.
Our View: Lowell is still suffering from nagging soreness, and it is not the worst thing in the world for him to get some time off during this NL trip. He will be back when the team returns to AL play, but until then he is a pretty iffy.
Red Sox | Ortiz hitting fourth
RedSox.MLB.com's Ian Browne reports Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz was in the cleanup spot Thursday, June 25.
Kenshin Kawakami (neck) hopes to make his scheduled start June
Kenshin Kawakami (neck) hopes to make his scheduled start June 30 at home against the Phillies.
Analysis: The move to fourth -- at least on this occasion -- was simply a product of manager Terry Francona giving first baseman Kevin Youkilis the night off. Jason Bay, who has been Boston's main cleanup hitter of late, occupied the three-hole in place of Youkilis. With the Red Sox playing under National League rules for six straight games this week, Francona has had to rotate Youkilis, Ortiz and Mike Lowell into two spots in the order. It also doesn’t hurt that Ortiz has been on fire lately, hitting .357 with six homers and 12 RBIs since June 6.

Red Sox move Ortiz to cleanup spot
Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was in the cleanup spot for Thursday's game against the Nationals for the first time since May 13, 2005.
Youkilis out of lineup
Kevin Youkilis is out of tonight's lineup at Washington, according to the Boston Globe.
Our View: He is not injured, and manager Terry Francona is just holding him out to rest. David Ortiz will cover first base as the Sox cannot use a DH at an NL ballpark.
Big Papi in lineup
David Ortiz is slated to cover first base and bat cleanup in tonight's game at Washington, according to the Boston Globe.
Our View: Skipper Terry Francona is holding Kevin Youkilis out to rest. Ortiz has been too hot to ride the pine as well, with homers in each of his last two games and six in June.
Youk sits, Ortiz at first
The Boston Globe is reporting that Red Sox' first baseman Kevin Youkilis is not in the lineup four Thursday night's game against the Nationals. David Ortiz is playing first, with Youkilis getting the night off.
Our View: With the Sox being in an NL park, someone has to sit, and tonight that person is Youk. With Ortiz starting to heat up, manager Terry Francona wanted to make sure he was in the lineup tonight. Youk will be back tomorrow, but adjust your lineups accordingly for tonight.

Lowell sits
According to the Boston Globe, Mike Lowell is not in the starting lineup again on Wednesday.
Our View: David Ortiz is playing first base and Kevin Youkilis slides over to the hot corner. Lowell has been bothered fatigue and nagging injuries, so with the Sox playing in the National League and Jon Lester having to hit for himself, Lowell was the obvious odd man out. Adjust your lineups accordingly.
Red Sox | Ortiz back in lineup Wednesday
Nick Cafardo, of The Boston Globe, reports Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz is back in the lineup Wednesday, June 24, batting fifth and playing first base. 3B Mike Lowell is sitting the bench.

Ortiz out of lineup Tuesday
The Boston Globe is reporting that David Ortiz is not in the Red Sox' lineup for Tuesday night's game against the Nationals. With no DH in the NL park, the Sox are forced to play without him tonight.
Our View: Ortiz will probable see some time at first while in NL parks, but with the lefty John Lannan on the hill tonight the team decided to give him the night off. Ortiz is finally starting to hit the ball, but anyone who owns him should find another option tonight.
Red Sox | Ortiz sitting Tuesday
Chad Finn, of The Boston Globe, reports Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz is out of the lineup Tuesday, June 23, as the team plays in a National League park. 3B Mike Lowell is back in the lineup after receiving two straight days of rest.

Slowly but surely Ortiz has started to rediscover his power
Slowly but surely Ortiz has started to rediscover his power stroke, as five of homers have come this month. His latest round-tripper sailed over the Green Monster in left field, a good sign that Ortiz is regaining his opposite field power. Since carrying a .185 average into June, Big Papi has batted .308 to push his average over the Mendoza Line.
Papi goes yard
David Ortiz may be starting to put some semblance of a season together. He hit his sixth home run of the season on Sunday in a 2-for-4 effort as Boston nipped the Braves 6-5.
Our View: Papi's struggles have been well documented this season, so we won't delve too deep here. But after a miserable start he has been showing signs of life. He now has five homers since June 6th, which is a vast improvement over the lone shot he had up until that point this season.
David Ortiz hit a two-run homer off Braves starter Jair Jurrjens
David Ortiz hit a two-run homer off Braves starter Jair Jurrjens on Sunday. The long ball was his sixth of the season and his fifth of the month. Ortiz was so bad for the first two months it's hard to pronounce him back after a few good weeks, but there's a very real chance that he is. [...]

Red Sox | Ortiz continues to rebound
The Associated Press reports Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz scored three runs and doubled Wednesday, June 17, to raise his batting average to .213. He is hitting .342 in the month of June.
Ortiz scores three times in win
David Ortiz stayed productive in Wednesday's 6-1 win over the Marlins. He was 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and three runs scored.
Our View: Perhaps those eye drops are making the difference for Ortiz. He has seven walks against two strike outs in his last seven games. It appears he is back on his way to being a productive fantasy DH.

Boston DH David Ortiz homered for the fifth time this season
News: Boston DH David Ortiz homered for the fifth time this season on Tuesday in a win over the Marlins. Big Papi went 2 for 3. His homer came in the fourth and was a solo shot and he added a two-run single later in the same inning for a total of three RBI. Ortiz also walked and has his average up to .210. [...]
Ortiz continues power surge
David Ortiz went 2-for-3 with a solo homer and three RBI in Tuesday's 8-2 win over Florida at Fenway Park. His other knock was a single.
Our View: Big Papi continues to enjoy a power surge, as he collected his fourth homer of June. He only hit one homer over the first two months of the season.
Wakefield, big frame lift Sox past Fish
Tim Wakefield threw six innings of two-run ball in his ninth quality start, and David Ortiz had a season-high three RBIs -- all in a six-run fourth -- in Tuesday's 8-2 win over the Marlins.
Ortiz, Wakefield lead Red Sox past Marlins
David Ortiz homered to start a six-run inning, then added a two-run single to finish it on Tuesday night and the Boston Red Sox beat the Florida Marlins 8-2.
Sox could move Saito
FoxSports.com is reporting that the Red Sox might be inclined to trade reliever Takashi Saito if the right deal presents itself. Saito has closed in the past, but he is serving as a set-up man in Boston for the time being.
Our View: Saito could be a nice addition for any team looking for someone to close or for a set-up man, but the Red Sox seem less likely to trade him now that they are getting production from David Ortiz at the plate. If the Sox do move Saito, they would want a major league bat in return. Keep an eye on what the Red Sox do, because if Saito were to move to a team in need of a closer, his fantasy value would skyrocket.
Rangers | Almost dealt for Saito?
FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports the Texas Rangers discussed sending 1B Hank Blalock to the Boston Red Sox for RP Takashi Saito before OF Josh Hamilton (hernia) went down. Those talks are unlikely to revive because Red Sox DH David Ortiz has shown signs of coming around.
Francona gives quartet a rest in finale
The Red Sox tried to put the finishing touches on a three-game sweep against the Phillies on Sunday with a lineup you can be sure manager Terry Francona won't duplicate again this season. Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz, J.D. Drew and Jason Varitek started the game on the bench.

Lowell out of lineup Friday
According to the Boston Globe, Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell is not in the lineup for Friday night's game against the Phillies. He will be replaced by Kevin Youkilis at third, while David Ortiz plays first.
Our View: Just a night off for Lowell, mainly because the Sox want to keep Papi in the lineup now that he is hitting. Expect Lowell back tomorrow, but if you have another option at third you will want to get Lowell out tonight.
Ortiz will start at first base for the Red Sox on Friday night,

Ortiz in lineup, playing first
The Boston Globe is reporting that David Ortiz is in the lineup and playing first base for the Red Sox' series opener at Philadelphia. Ortiz will hit fifth, and Kevin Youkilis will move to third to give Mike Lowell the night off.
Our View: Now that Papi is showing some signs of life at the plate, the Red Sox can't afford to take him out. With that being said, they now have to suffer with him defensively at first. It will be interesting to see how the Sox handle Ortiz in National League parks, but don't be shocked if he sits more than he plays.
Red Sox | Ortiz at first Friday
Chad Finn, of The Boston Globe, reports Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz is starting at first base Friday, June 12, with 1B Kevin Youkilis moving to third base. 3B Mike Lowell will receive the night off.
Ortiz finding his swing againFrom ESPN's Peter Gammons:
Ortiz finding his swing againFrom ESPN's Peter Gammons: "The most important thing about Ortiz is the glimmer of hope from the Yankee series. The home run he hit just inside the foul pole last weekend was hardly the beginning of anything, but the home run he hit Tuesday into the center field bleachers against A.J. Burnett was more David Ortiz. As hitting coach Dave Magadan said to me, the great thing about that home run was he wasn't trying to hit a home run, it just went. And then to homer off CC Sabathia, who I think has gone a whole season before without giving up a homer to a left-handed hitter ... he has started to get that swing back."Fantasy Focus Baseball PodcastFri, Jun 12 [...]
Phillies fan claims to have hexed Citi Field
A man claiming to be a Philadelphia Phillies fan who worked as a foreman during the construction of Citi Field is saying he buried three Phillies jerseys in the stadium according to the Newark Star-Leger.
Our View: So that's why the Mets are so bad in 2009. They might be best served not to dig up the jerseys if they are actually there, however. The Yankees made sure to dig up that David Ortiz jersey and we've all seen how well that worked out.

Well, well, here's the homer streak fantasy owners have been
Well, well, here's the homer streak fantasy owners have been waiting for. With three long balls in his past five contests, Big Papi is certainly raking the ball. It's interesting to note that his line drive percentage (23.1) is very strong, which opens the possibility for him to reach 35-40 doubles. That, in turn, could help him increase his home run rate.

Ortiz likely to sit in Philly this weekend
David Ortiz might not play first base during the Red Sox interleague play games against the Phillies this weekend according to the Boston Globe.
Our View: Manager Terry Francona said Ortiz might start one game if the Red Sox decide to spell Mike Lowell and move Kevin Youkilis to third, but that otherwise Ortiz will be out. This is inopportune timing for Ortiz and his fantasy owners as the lovable slugger appears to finally be emerging from a protracted slump.
Encarnacion suffers setback
An MRI on Edwin Encarnacion's injured left wrist has confirmed that the third basemen has suffered a setback in his recovery according to the Cincinnati Inquirer. It is not known when he will be able to begin a rehab assignment.
Our View: 2009 is shaping up to be a lost season for the Reds slugger. He was batting only .129 before the injury and now it appears that the team doesn't really know when he's coming back. If you have no other injuries, he's probably still worth stashing on your disabled list, but higher priority should be given to just about any other player. Players who suffer wrist injuries, like David Ortiz or Derrek Lee, tend to not hit as well once they come back, especially in the short term. So the odds of Encarnacion being a productive fantasy player this year are slim.
Red Sox | Ortiz may sit the bench in interleague play
The Boston Globe's Amalie Benjamin reports Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz may sit the bench in interleague play in a National League park this weekend. He could play one game at first base with 1B Kevin Youkilis sliding to third and 3B Mike Lowell getting a day off, though.
David Ortiz may not play first base in this weekend's series
David Ortiz may not play first base in this weekend's series at Philadelphia. Being relegated to pinch-hitting duty for three games would obviously be disappointing to Ortiz as he's shown signs of breaking out of his season-long slump-- he's riding a seven-game hitting streak and has two homers in his last three games-- but it's clearly in Boston's best interest. [...]

Ortiz passes eye test, gets drops
According to the Boston Globe, Red Sox' slugger David Ortiz underwent an eye test on Monday. His vision was said to have checked out well, and he was given eye drops for dry eyes.
Our View: As expected, Ortiz has no problems with his eyesight, but the dry eyes issue could be real. Ortiz said he has been blinking more in the batter's box due to the dryness, so maybe this will help. We seriously doubt that dry eyes is the entire cause of the debacle that is his 2009 season.

Ortiz is scheduled to visit an optometrist on Monday in the next chapter of the ongoing tragicomic saga "What's The Matter With Papi?" But might it be that Ortiz is starting to figure things out? He's now hit in five straight, has driven in runs in three straight, and actually seems more comfortable further down in the lineup. The .287-54-137 Papi of 2006 may be lost and gone forever, but considering that Ortiz is now on the waiver wire in many leagues, owners with the roster flexibility to do so might want to take a shot on him, just in case he's getting a bit of his Papi-ness back.
Ortiz goes deep in win
David Ortiz had a big night at the plate on Saturday in the Red Sox' 8-1 win over the Rangers. Ortiz went 2-for-3 with a home run, a run, and an RBI.
Our View: Nice to see Ortiz go deep, but he still only has two homers on the year and is hitting an abysmal .196. Until he shows he can hit with power consistently, fantasy owners should stay away.

Ortiz to see eye doctor
According to FOX Sports, slumping Red Sox slugger David Ortiz will consult an eye doctor on Monday.
Our View: Ortiz is apparently having vision problems at the plate, which could be the explanation for his dreadful start to the 2009 season. Ortiz has had "dry eyes" this season, causing him to blink repeatedly during at-bats. The condition has apparently plagued him since the offseason. Hopefully a visit to the eye doc will correct the problem and get him back on track.

It’s been a disastrous season thus far for Ortiz, who is batting .187 with one home run and 20 RBIs. In spite of Wednesday’s effort, the former must-start should be benched until his bat shows some more signs of life.
Ortiz to have eyes checked
The Boston Globe is reporting that David Ortiz is planning on having his eyes checked. "There have been some situations that something has happened to my eyes, my vision. But I'm planning on getting my eyes checked out sometime soon. I don't know. It's just sometimes that I've been feeling lately. It's not anything crazy, but just to make sure."
Our View: Ortiz went on to say that the players get their eyes checked every year and that he has 20-20 vision, so don't expect any changes coming due to his eyesight. Ortiz is trying to do anything to break out of his slump, so who knows, maybe this will work.

Ortiz's struggles continue
David Ortiz went 1-for-5 with three strikeouts in the Red Sox 5-1 win over Detroit on Tuesday. After starting the season with a 39 game homerless streak, he has now gone 11 games since his first and only home run.
Our View: It continues to be ugly for Big Papi owners even after the Red Sox dropped the slugger to sixth in the batting order. With his pedigree, it is hard to believe he won't turn it around to at least some degree, but if you can unload Ortiz for any kind of quality in return, you might be well served to do so.
