First baseman Daric Barton could face long odds to find at-bats in 2009. He had hip surgery in October and his tonsils removed in January, and Barton may be behind entering spring training. He then needs to fight Jason Giambi, Jack Cust, and Travis Buck for playing time. "He'll need to come in and have a nice spring and a good start to the season," manager Bob Geren tells Scout.com.Barton, 23, hit only .226 with nine homers in his first full season as a starter. He carried high scouting grades throughout his minor league career, and it seems a little too soon to give up on him. However, Barton seems unlikely to find regular at-bats given that Cust and Giambi are certain to be everyday players. Daric is still worth a look later in AL-only drafts, but that's about it.

Daric Barton is happy that the A's signed Jason Giambi, even though it likely means less playing time for him, according to MLB.com. "I think that's natural (thinking about his potential loss of playing time)," Barton conceded. "But I wasn't negative about anything. Did I think about my situation? Yeah. But at the same time, I can understand what [the A's are] doing. I mean, I look back at my year and I don't think bringing Jason in is a bad thing at all. As far as the team goes, in the lineup and in the clubhouse, it can't be anything but good for all of us."Given Barton's struggles thus far, you can hardly blame the A's for bringing Giambi back. Daric is still just 23, so he'll likely get another shot to be a regular at some point, but it's uncertain if he'll ever develop enough power to be useful in fantasy.
