Dice-K pitches well in loss
Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched very well on Saturday, but his offense denied him a win. The Japanese import allowed just one run on six hits and five walks over seven innings in a 3-0 loss to the Yankees.
Our View: Dice-K held the Yankees bruising lineup in check, but the five walks against just three strikeouts is troubling. He has walked nine in 18.1 innings since his return from the DL.
Dice-K can call Saturday a successful outing despite the fact
Dice-K can call Saturday a successful outing despite the fact he reached four walks for the first time in his three starts since returning from the DL. He also achieved a season-high 115 pitches, so it should be interesting to see how he responds after tossing 225 pitches in his last two outings. He should be a favorable starting option on Oct. 2 when he faces the Indians at Fenway Park.

Our View: Dice-K wasn't quite as solid today as he was in his last start, but this was still a fairly encouragng start. He is making his case to be the team's fourth starter in the playoffs, and he looks to be healthy and close to finding his old form.

Dice-K solid in return
Daisuke Matsuzaka only surrendered three hits over six scoreless innings in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Angels at Fenway Park. He had three walks with five strikeouts.
Our View: This was a very encouraging outing for Dice-K, as he made his first start since June 19 following his bout with a strained right shoulder. He looks to be fine to consider for fantasy duty in his next trip to the hill.

Wakefield throws side session
Tim Wakefield threw a side session today, but the Sox remain uncertain if he will return to the rotation, according to the Boston Globe. Skipper Terry Francona said, "Other than throwing a side, there is really not a lot new. The strength deficit from one leg to the other is very noticeable. It is certainly not getting beter. Because he is trying to hard to get ready to do what he does, which is pitch, we are trying to kind of stay with this and do the right. To be honest with you, I do not know if we know what the right thing is yet."
Our View: If the nerve problem that affects his back and his lower left leg improves enough to allow him to pitch, he would start either Sunday in Baltimore or Monday in Kansas City. Daisuke Matsuzaka is set to return to the rotation tonight against the Angels.
Dice-K activated
Daisuke Matsuzaka has been activated from the 60-day DL following his recovery from a strained right shoulder, according to the Sports Network.
Our View: Dice-K will start tonight's game against Boston at Fenway Park. He will be making his first start since June 19, so fantasy owners should not be counting on him to have a strong outing in his return.

Dice-K returning to rotation Tuesday
Updating a previous report, the Boston Red Sox have announced that starting pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka will make his return to the rotation Tuesday night against the Angels, according to the Boston Globe. Matsuzaka will be on regular rest after pitching Wednesday in a Single-A playoff game, although he will be getting one extra day due to Monday's off-day.
Our View: Dice-K looked very sharp in his last outing on Wednesday, and apparently the Sox are convinced he is ready to help out the rotation. He will be taking Paul Byrd's spot in the rotation on Tuesday, and it looks like he will stay in the rotation for the rest of the season, assuming he stays healthy. If his last start was any indication, he should be able to help out fantasy teams over the last few weeks.

News: Red Sox SP Daisuke Matsuzaka, who hasn't pitched in the majors since June 19 because of a shoulder injury, will make his return Sept. 15 in a start against the Angels, according to MLB.com. He pitched 6 2/3 innings in his last rehab start for Class A Salem on Wednesday. "It sounded like he held his velocity and had some depth to his slider," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. "Later into the game, as he accumulated some pitches, his fastball stayed, which was great. We know it's Winston-Salem. But pitching good is better than pitching bad. And we wanted him to get deep into the game and compete a little bit, and he did all that." [...]

Dice-K nearing return
There's a good chance Daisuke Matsuzaka could return to the Red Sox rotation next week, according to the Boston Globe.
Our View: Dice-K pitched very well in a Single-A playoff game on Wednesday night, featuring lots of movement on all of his pitches while having his fastball consistently in the low nineties (90-93 MPH). His next day to pitch on regular rest would be Monday, but with the Sox being off that day he could start in journeyman Paul Byrd's place on Tuesday. The Sox don't need a fifth starter again until September 19th, however, and he may not pitch until then. Stay tuned.
