Our View: Dice-K had looked good in previous rehab sessions, but the wheels came off in this one. It's poor timing too, considering the addition of Paul Byrd in the rotation and the day that he had on Sunday. Dice-K will have one more rehab start before rejoining the team, but it had better be a good one.

Matsuzaka estimated that he was throwing at 65 to 70 percent of his intensity, as he was "just working on certain things." The righty, who last pitched for the Red Sox on June 19, will make his next start on Sept. 4 for Triple-A Pawtucket. Since the Minor League season sends shortly after that, Matsuzaka is expected to return to the big club for a Sept. 9 start vs. the Orioles. It remains to be seen whether he can be a solid contributor in mixed formats.

Updating an earlier report, Daisuke Matsuzaka fared well in Monday's rehab start in the Gulf Coast League, according to the Boston Globe. He fired four strikeouts over three innings, and only gave up one hit.
Our View: Skipper Terry Francona was pleased with Matsuzaka's outing, and noted that he had good command of his breaking ball and fastball. He will make his next rehab start with Double-A Portland Thursday, and then advance to Triple-A Pawtucket September 3, barring a setback.

Our View: The team isn't going to push Dice-K too far today, and if he feels any fatigue or discomfort they won't hesitate to pull him early. If he makes it through the start with no complications today, it would be a nice step forward in his recovery.

Our View: This is a good step in Dice-K's return, and assuming things continue to go well he could be back in early September. If he is healthy, the Sox could surely use him in the rotation, but it is unclear at this point if he can return to his 2008 form. He would be a fantasy gamble when returns, but may be worth the risk if you are desperate for starting pitching.

This only slightly affects his eligibility status, as the right-hander won't be able to come off the DL until Aug. 18 instead of a scenario in which he could've been activated in early August. The Red Sox are imploring Matsuzaka to improve his conditioning, so it's not assured that he could return the first day in which he's eligible. Owners shouldn't be afraid to explore other starting options given Dice-K's uncertain status.
