Dice-K lit up in rehab start
Daisuke Matsuzaka allowed five runs in just two innings during his Double-A rehab start on Sunday.
Our View: Dice-K had looked good in previous rehab sessions, but the wheels came off in this one. It's poor timing too, considering the addition of Paul Byrd in the rotation and the day that he had on Sunday. Dice-K will have one more rehab start before rejoining the team, but it had better be a good one.

The first inning, in which Dice-K tossed 49 pitches and gave up all five runs, is what did him in. Matsuzaka estimated that he was throwing at 65 to 70 percent of his intensity, as he was "just working on certain things." The righty, who last pitched for the Red Sox on June 19, will make his next start on Sept. 4 for Triple-A Pawtucket. Since the Minor League season sends shortly after that, Matsuzaka is expected to return to the big club for a Sept. 9 start vs. the Orioles. It remains to be seen whether he can be a solid contributor in mixed formats.

Dice-K targeting Sept. 8 return
News: From The Sports Xchange: RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka finally capped off a training/shoulder strengthening stint at the Sox Player Development Complex in Florida and rejoined the big-league club Tuesday. Matsuzaka engaged in a throwing session on the outfield grass during BP and is scheduled to pitch Saturday for Double-A Portland (Maine). Matsuzaka expressed happiness at being with his teammates in Boston but also admitted he wasn't fully "back" in Boston. "I am happy to be rejoining the team, but I haven't returned to the lineup yet. So I can't say I've fully rejoined the team. I'm only traveling with the team," he said through translator Mikio Yoshimura. "I'll still be working out with the minor league teams, and I still think of myself as being in the minors. It might be a bit further down the road when I can talk about rejoining the team." [...]

Updating a previous report, rehabbing righty Daisuke Matsuzaka is scheduled to throw three innings in his rehab start in the Gulf Coast League on Monday, according to MLB.com. Matsuzaka is rehabbing a strained right shoulder.
Our View: The team isn't going to push Dice-K too far today, and if he feels any fatigue or discomfort they won't hesitate to pull him early. If he makes it through the start with no complications today, it would be a nice step forward in his recovery.
Red Sox | Dice-K set for rehab start
The Boston Globe reports Boston Red Sox SP Daisuke Matsuzaka (shoulder) will pitch approximately three innings, if all goes well, in the Gulf Coast League Monday, Aug. 24. “He is significantly stronger in the shoulder, he is significantly leaner in his body, and he is also significantly stronger in his body, so there’s a lot of reasons to be excited,’’ manager Terry Francona said.

Dice-K to throw in GCL on Monday
Daisuke Matsuzaka is scheduled to pitch in the Gulf Coast League on Monday, according to MLB.com. Matsuzaka is trying to return from a strained right shoulder.
Our View: This is a good step in Dice-K's return, and assuming things continue to go well he could be back in early September. If he is healthy, the Sox could surely use him in the rotation, but it is unclear at this point if he can return to his 2008 form. He would be a fantasy gamble when returns, but may be worth the risk if you are desperate for starting pitching.
Dice-K to begin rehab assignment
News: Boston RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka (shoulder) will pitch in a Gulf Coast League game next Monday, then head to Boston to visit with doctors. If all goes well, Matsuzaka will pitch for Double-A Portland on Aug. 29 and at Triple-A Pawtucket on Sept. 3. [...]

Dice-K threw 65 pitches in his last session Aug. 14, saying he had no complaints afterward. Manager Terry Francona said Matsuzaka's arm slot was a little inconsistent, but nothing out of the ordinary for someone working himself back into shape. Matsuzaka has struggled throughout the season, putting up an 8.23 ERA over 35 innings and eight starts. He was placed on the 15-day DL with a right shoulder strain on April 15 and returned on May 22. Our View: The Sox have Dice-K on a pretty solid schedule to build his arm strength back up, and assuming these sessions go well he could return to the team sometime in the next few weeks. Even if he does come back, he will have a lot to prove before he can be considered a good fantasy option.

This only slightly affects his eligibility status, as the right-hander won't be able to come off the DL until Aug. 18 instead of a scenario in which he could've been activated in early August. The Red Sox are imploring Matsuzaka to improve his conditioning, so it's not assured that he could return the first day in which he's eligible. Owners shouldn't be afraid to explore other starting options given Dice-K's uncertain status.
