News: Outfielder Craig Monroe and catcher Miguel Perez agreed Tuesday to minor league contracts with the Pirates. Perez spent last season with the Pirates' Double-A Altoona farm club, hitting .281 with two homers and 22 RBI in 57 games. The Pirates' payroll is staying in the $50 million range, and they haven't gone after any high-priced offensive talent during the winter. They are hoping to get a comeback season from a power hitter such as Monroe, who turns 32 next month, without having to make a substantial investment in him. [...]

Monroe, a right-handed hitter, has spent parts of each of the last eight seasons in the big leagues and will be a candidate to compete for the role of a backup outfielder, helping to balance out the Pirates' glut of lefty hitters. Perez returns to the organization after playing with the Pirates' Double-A Altoona club all of last season. Perez appeared in 57 games and finished with a .281 batting average and 22 RBIs. He also had a 37.5 percent success rate in throwing out potential basestealers.

Monroe agreed Tuesday to a minor league contract with the Pirates. Monroe hit .202 with eight home runs and 29 RBIs in 58 games with the Twins last season. He has a .253 career average with 112 homers and 417 RBIs in 780 games with the Rangers, Tigers, Cubs and Twins from 2001-08. Monroe had a career-high 28 homers and 92 RBIs for the AL champion Tigers in 2006, but his production slipped to 12 homers and 59 RBIs in 122 games with the Tigers and Cubs in 2007.

Outfielder Craig Monroe has signed a minor-league contract with Pittsburgh, and has been invited to spring training, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.Monroe has power, but lacks any semblance of a batting eye. He was designated for assignment by the Twins in August last season after hitting just .202. He had some decent years in Detroit, including a 28 home run campaign in 2006, but he strikes out a ton and has a career OBP of .301, so don't expect much out of the veteran if he makes the team.
