Counsell and the Milwaukee Brewers completed a $1 million, one-year contract on Monday after the veteran infielder passed a physical. The 38-year-old Counsell spent the past two seasons with the Brewers, but the club declined its $3.4 million option on his contract earlier this offseason. Counsell, entering his 14th major league season, grew up in the Milwaukee suburb of Whitefish Bay and will provide infield depth - he can play second base, shortstop and third base.

Craig Counsell's one-year, $1 million deal with the Brewers is official after he passed his physical exam, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.Counsell wasn't real productive with Milwaukee last season, only batting .226 with one home run and 14 RBI. The Brewers brought him back as a bench player when they learned that the Cardinals might be interested in his services as a short-term replacement for Troy Glaus, who recently had shoulder surgery.

The 38-year-old is still capable of grinding out at-bats (46/42 BB/K ratio in '08), but he's batted just .223 with a total of seven steals over the past two seasons. Even with his multi-position eligibility, he offers little value to owners.

Craig Counsell has attracted interest from 12 teams, reports Buster Olney of ESPN.com. Olney thinks it is possible he will leave Milwaukee for a multi-year deal. Counsell, who turns 40 next August, batted .285/.357/.408 with four homers, 31 RBI and 61 runs scored in 2009 while shouldering his biggest workload since the 2005 season. Olney writes that he could be a possible fit with the Yankees or Red Sox.
