Clayton Richard didn't factor into the decison on Thursday as the Padres beat the Rockies 5-4. Richard went six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out two.

Our View: When Richard keeps his stuff under control, he can be a very effective pitcher, and he did so tonight. Two walks are a very good sign, and Richard has now put together two very good starts in a row.

This was Richard's first road quality start as a Padre. In four previous outings away from San Diego, Richard posted a 10.69 ERA and a 2.50 WHIP to warrant himself all but a spot starter strictly in home affairs. That hasn't necessarily changed since a start against the Pirates' anemic offense isn't an ideal barometer to judge whether Richard has solved his road woes. Keep him on the bench for his Sept. 24 start vs. the powerful Rockies at Coors Field.

Our View: Richard was very good in his six innings today, and he deserved to get a win. It looks like he has stated to control his fastball a bit better as of late, and if he can keep the walk total down, he can be effective.

Our View: Richard was a disappointment after only allowing one earned run over 6.2 innings in his previous start against the Nationals. He allowed six earned runs in two of his last three starts.

This was Richard's second loss in eight starts as a Padres, and it's becoming more apparent where owners can expect his future losses to occur. Despite a dominant 1.88 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP in four starts at PETCO Park, Richard has a 10.69 ERA and a 2.50 WHIP in four road starts in a Padres uniform, even with starts at spacious ballparks like Turner Field and AT&T Park. That means he should be started in all formats on Sept. 12 at home against the Rockies.
