JAYS SURPRISED BY LEE DEAL
The Blue Jays would not accept Jason Knapp as the key player in a trade for Roy Halladay and that, more than anything, redirected the Phillies' attention to Cliff Lee. Toronto officials were adamant that Double-A starter Kyle Drabek be in a deal for Halladay, sources tell the Post. They liked Knapp, but worried that he was too far from the majors (pitching at Low-A) and had endured shoulder problems this year, a source said. That combination kept the Blue Jays from considering Knapp to be the main piece in the trade.PHILLIES TRADE 4 FOR LEE Toronto officials were surprised that Lee could be obtained without a more sure thing than Knapp leading the trade. The Phillies did not want to use Drabek to make this deal. And they have now completed a trade for a top-of-the-rotation starter without using either Drabek or J.A. Happ, who is currently in their rotation. This deal did come with a price, however. Two scouts who cover the Phillies system said they thought Knapp had a higher ceiling than Drabek, albeit with greater risk becuase he is only at Low-A. The scouts liked the rest of Philadelphia's haul of pitcher Carlos Carasco, catcher Lou Marson and infielder Jason Donald. But the scouts viewed them as good pieces for a 25-man roster at some point and not stars. Toronto officials have been telling interested teams that they are not interested in players that supplement a roster in exchange for Halladay. The Jays would prefer, these sources say, to shorten the quantity in a deal in exchange for high-end quality. A team official who has spoken to Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi said that he now believes the Red Sox have the best potential to get Halladay -- if Halladay is actually traded -- because Boston has offered top pitching prospect Clay Buchholz in a deal.
Red Sox | Close to acquiring V-Mart
Michael Hurley, of NESN.com, reports the Boston Red Sox are on the verge of landing Cleveland Indians C Victor Martinez, according to multiple sources. It is unknown who the Indians will receive in return. However, the Red Sox will not be sending SP Clay Buchholz or RP Daniel Bard, according to FOXSports.com.
Red Sox to acquire V-Mart
According to Bob Nightengale's Twitter account, the Red Sox are about to acquire Indians' catcher Victor Martinez.
Our View: No word on the specifics yet, but one would think that Clay Buchholz has to be involved. Another uncertainty is what do the Red Sox do with newly acquired first baseman Adam LaRoche? There is already a logjam at the position and V-Mart likely won't catch every day. Looks like the Sox have some crazy platoon situations ahead of them. Stay tuned for official details.
Red Sox | Working on three-way deal for V-Mart
ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports the Boston Red Sox are working on a three-team trade that would acquire Cleveland Indians C Victor Martinez and would send SP Clay Buchholz to Cleveland and 1B Adam LaRoche to another team.
