Our View: After a no hitter in 2007 Buchholz looked like Boston's ace of the future, but last year the wheels came off and he struggled mightily with a 2-9 record and a bloated 6.75 ERA. He shouldn't be that bad again, but holds little value outside of deep AL-only leagues, assuming he cracks the Red Sox rotation.

News: Boston SP Clay Buchholz is trying to keep his solid spring going. He struck out six in 3 2/3 innings against the Orioles on Sunday, allowing one run and four hits with two walks. "He's not afraid of contact with his fastball," manager Terry Francona said, "and saying that, he actually threw some fastballs by people, got some swings and misses. But was aggressive with it. I thought as he got into the game, started getting a little better feel for his changeup, breaking ball." Buchholz, whose struggles last season got him demoted to Double-A Portland in August, has a 1.04 ERA in 11 2/3 innings this spring. "I think it's a steady process as far as the pitch efficiency to throwing fastballs, getting contact, getting groundballs," he said, "and that's all what goes into being able to start in a big league game." Clay Buchholz had his third successful outing of the spring, but Boston fell 6-2 to Baltimore on Sunday. The young pitcher struck out six batters over 3.2 innings, while allowing four hits, two walks, and one run.

Our View: The run was the first that he's given up over 8.2 innings this spring. He is battling with Brad Penny and potentially John Smoltz for the fifth spot in the rotation, but neither of the veterans have thrown in any game action yet. As it stands, he could start the season in the Red Sox rotation, but he will have to show well to remain there.

News: Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz pitched three perfect innings, striking out two, in Tuesday's game against Baltimore. "I thought it was a really good step," Francona said. "I thought he threw kind of a power changeup. He threw some really good ones, and he fouled them up and he repeated it. Got a ground ball with two outs on a first pitch. I thought he had three really good innings." Buchholz tossed a no-hitter in his second major league start, against Baltimore at Fenway Park on Sept. 1, 2007. But he struggled last season and was sent to Double-A in August. "It didn't go quite like it went today last year," Buchholz said. "But I went out there throwing the pitches that I want to throw instead of second-guessing myself. I went out there and said, 'Hey, this is what I'm going to do if I feel like a changeup would be the right pitch here.' And if you have that mind-set, it's hard to say if anything is the wrong pitch to throw if you're going to throw it with conviction. And that was my whole deal today." [...]

News: Boston SP Clay Buchholz looked sharp on the mound, and his Red Sox teammates certainly appeared comfortable at the plate. Buchholz worked two scoreless innings in his first start of the spring and the Red Sox jumped on the Reds with 12 runs in the first three innings of a 16-5 victory Saturday night. "There's no doubt in my mind that I know that I have the physical ability to do anything I want to do in this game," Buchholz said. "It's just a lot harder than a lot of people think it is as far as the mental side of the game. And that's where I had to build a lot on this offseason, was talking to people and listening to what their past experiences were. For Buchholz, the outing was an improvement over what he did during last year's spring training, when he posted a record of 1-3 with a 10.03 ERA. "It seemed like a slow start and I was always waiting for it to get better during spring training, and then the season came and it still hadn't gotten any better," Buchholz said of last spring. "So, definitely, that's what I wanted to go out there and do. I wanted to throw some pitches down in the zone, get groundballs and get some outs and that was my goal. I went out there today not to try to strike everybody out, but to get balls in play and let the hitters get themselves out." [...]
