Updating previous reports, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Goold reports the St. Louis Cardinals also sent a player to be named or cash to the Boston Red Sox along with OF Chris Duncan for SS Julio Lugo and the remaining $13 million on Lugo's deal. Lugo will be the backup shortstop and utility infielder for now.

According to the Boston Globe, the Red Sox have optioned newly acquired outfielder Chris Duncan to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Our View: Not only is there no room to put Duncan at the major league level right now, but the Sox likely want him to get some seasoning in Triple-A to see if he can bust out of his current 1-for-31 slump. If Duncan is recalled at some point, it's hard to imagine his as more than a bat off the bench.

Less than a week after designating him for assignment, Boston has traded shortstop Julio Lugo to the St. Louis Cardinals for outfielder Chris Duncan, according to Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: Duncan is mired in an epic slump, going just just 1-for-31 this month, but was a classic candidate to benefit from a change of scenery. A highly defensively challenged player, he profiles much better as an American Leaguer. Though with Big Papi entrenched as the Sox DH, he should struggle for at-bats. Lugo meanwhile, also benefits greatly from the deal, as the Cardinals badly needed a major league ready. He figures to see lots of playing time under Tony La Russa.

Our View: This move makes sense for the Cardinals on nearly every level. Duncan is mired in a prodigious slump, with just one hit and one total base in the month of July, and were in dire need of a major league caliber infielder. As long as the Red Sox pick up the majority of Lugo's remaining salary, this is a big win for the Birds on Bat.

Our View: Barden is taking the roster spot of struggling outfielder Chris Duncan, who was demoted late last night. The Rookie of the Month for April, Barden has shown little offensively since then and likely won't produce enough or see enough time to be fantasy worthy.

According to John Marecek's Twitter account, Chris Duncan may be heading to the minors in the near future.

Our View: No details yet, but Duncan's struggles have been beyond miserable this month. He has exactly one hit and one total base in July, and currently has no business playing at the major league level. It would behoove the Cardinals to make the move sooner rather than later. He won't be missed in fantasy formats.
