Our View: Wang made two scoreless appearances in relief earlier this season. Rather than put him in a role where he had success, the Yankees have put Phil Hughes, a starting pitcher who is among the best prospects in the organization, in the bullpen.

On the bright side, Wang did finish with five strikeouts and one walk in his first start since April 18, far better control than he showed before landing on the 15-day DL. Also, his ERA fell from 16.00 to 14.46, so at least he’s heading in the right direction. Proceed cautiously when he takes the hill against Josh Beckett in Boston next time out.

Largely because Hughes struck out 21 batters and walked three over his final three starts -- posting a 3.50 ERA during that span -- the Yankees decided to keep him in the bullpen rather than option him to Triple-A. They still see Hughes as a future cog in their rotation -- and they know that a bullpen assignment may potentially stunt his growth -- but the Yankees nonetheless felt the need to reward one of their most promising young starters. Our View: This is a puzzling decision since the Yankees said only yesterday that this would not be the case. Either way, it appears to be happening now and Hughes will be out of the rotation until an injury to a different Yankees starter or another Wang blowup. If you have an available roster spot, it might make sense to hold on to Hughes, but if not, there is probably little value in keeping him and waiting.
