The New York Post is reporting that Mets' outfielder Carlos Beltran wants to finish his career with the team. Beltran believes he can play at least six more seasons, and he wants to play them out in New York with the Mets.
Our View: Beltran is looking for a contract extension, as his current deal expires after the 2011 season. He has shown plenty of heart this year, coming back from a serious knee injury to contribute to the team, so expect his agent, Scott Boras, to be in talks with the team after the season is out.

Our View: In 12 games since coming off the disabled list earlier this month, Beltran is batting .325 with a home run and five RBI - very encouraging news for a team who thought his career might be in jeopardy earlier this season.

Beltran's performance as the designated hitter for Class A Brooklyn on Wednesday -- 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI -- was secondary to the way he felt after getting back in game action for the first time in 10 weeks, though Beltran's postgame comments revealed some anticipated soreness that comes from a combination of being out of commission for so long and the general state of ballplayers physically by the time September rolls around. "I'm not 100 percent, but no one in baseball plays at 100 percent right now," Beltran said, according to Mets vice president for media relations Jay Horwitz. Beltran did not note any specific pain related to the bone bruise in his right knee that has had him sidelined since June 22. Beltran is scheduled to play five innings in center field in Brooklyn on Thursday, and whether or not that plan stays in place should be a good indication of how he is progressing. Stay tuned.

According to Metsblog.com, Carlos Beltran went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI in his first rehab game for the Single-A Brooklyn Cyclones.
Our View: This bodes well for Beltran and his comeback hopes. He insists he'll return this season and wants to play for "peace of mind" since the Mets are clearly out of the race. He is slated to start in the field in tomorrow's game and play five innings.

Carlos Beltran wants to play again this season for "peace of mind," according to the Newark Star-Ledger.
Our View: Beltran is beginning a rehab assignment Wednesday night at Single-A Brooklyn and will rejoin the Amazins next week barring a setback. With the mysterious and lingering nature of his knee injury, and the fact that the Mets are sitting 18.5 games out of first place, it truly does make little sense for him to come back in 2009. Team doctors have said that Beltran will not be risking further injury by returning, however, and this looks like a way for the team to begin the healing process from its disastrous season a little early.
