Our View: Team medical director Dr. David Altchek cleared him to shed his knee brace, and Beltran will play with Single-A Brooklyn Wednesday. The elite outfielder could return to the Mets in 7-10 days, barring a setback.

Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman is reporting on his Twitter page that Mets' outfielder Carlos Beltran could return to the lineup in 7-to-10 days. Beltran has been on the DL since June 22 with a bone bruise on his right knee.

Our View: Beltran returning to the Mets' lineup isn't nearly enough to get them back in the race, but it would be some good news in a season that was filled with disappointment. If Beltran is close to fully healthy when he comes back, he could be an excellent addition to a fantasy team for the playoffs. It is unclear how he will respond when he does get back on the field, however, and it would be smart to limit your expectations of him.

According to the New York Daily News, Mets' outfielder Carlos Beltran said his knee has been pain-free for about two weeks, but he has not been cleared to run the bases. Beltran insisted that he plans to return to the lineup before this season is over.

Our View: Unfortunately for Beltran, running the bases is a prerequisite for beginning a rehab assignment, so his comeback won't be able to advance until he gets that clearance. He wants to play again this year, but with the Mets spiraling toward the bottom of the division, they surely won't rush to get him back out there. If he does contribute again this season, it likely won't be for another several weeks.

Beltran said he took about 30 fly balls and the bone bruise on his knee bothered him twice, but with much less pain than before. "I think it's progress because I didn't feel it all the time," he said "and I ran in the pool today, like six miles per hour, and I didn't feel anything. It's getting better little by little."
