Updating a previous report, the New York Daily News is now saying that Carlos Beltran will not need microfracture surgery and that his original diagnosis of a bone bruise was correct.

Our View: This should come as a huge sigh of relief for the Amazins and Beltran owners, as there was some speculation that he might never be the same player again. He will still be out through the All-Star break, which is longer than originally thought, but should be back soon afterward.

Our View: The gut punches just keep coming for the New York Mets. The team will surely avoid the procedure, usually reserved for NBA players, at all costs, but that might just mean Beltran coming back and playing through more pain. Our View: Doesn't sound like the Mets think Beltran's knee problems are any minor thing. This is just more bad news for the Amazins' and Beltran fantasy owners. Hold your breath that he is activated from the DL when eligible on July 7, but plan for longer.

Our View: The Mets were concerned that Beltran and John Maine, who is suffering from the same ailment, had caught Swine flu from a Mets' employee who is being tested for the illness. Our View: Apparently he picked up a bug from Carlos Beltran (one one of the other sickly Mets) and says that his stomach is "killing him". He threw a rocky bullpen session Tuesday and the illness is clearly affecting his performance. He says he'll be on the mound Friday, but how well he handles pitching with stomach discomfort remains to be seen. This may be a good time to leave Maine on your bench.

No fear of swine flu exists, but an awareness does. Beltran, who hasn't played since he was removed from the game May 30, underwent more tests Tuesday and, as the club awaited results of those tests, he returned to the team's hotel. Maine, ill since May 31 when he was removed from his start, said he felt marginally better. He did some of his normal between-starts conditioning work. The club still believes he will be ready to make his next start, scheduled for Friday, June 5 in Washington.
