Phillies | Bastardo to start Tuesday
Updating previous reports, the Philadelphia Phillies will recall SP Antonio Bastardo from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to start Tuesday, June 2, against the San Diego Padres, according to The Associated Press. He will fill SP Brett Myers' (hip) spot in the starting rotation.
Myers placed on DL
Brett Myers has been officially placed on the 15-day DL, according to TSN. Myers will likely miss the remainder of the regular season as he needs surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip.
Our View: Myers could have pitched through the injury, but surgery was the best option to prevent further damage. Myers is optimistic he may be able to return if the Phillies make the playoffs, but is no longer useful for fantasy leagues.

Escalona recalled by Phillies
Sergio Escalona has been recalled by the Phillies from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, according to TSN. The club placed Brett Myers (torn labrum, right hip) on the 15-day DL as the adjoining move.
Our View: Escalona fared well during his last stint with the Phillies, and skipper Charlie Manuel likes his potential, but he does not merit fantasy consideration outside of deeper leagues as a middle reliever.

The torn laburm, with bone irregularity in the surrounding region, is similar that to that of teammate second baseman Chase Utley, who was shut down for roughly four months during the offseason and part of Spring Training. No date has been set for the surgery, and the Phillies declined to set a specific timetable for Myers' return. But team physician Michael Ciccotti said that it will be 10 to 12 weeks before the 28-year-old could return to a mound and start throwing, all but crushing his value.

Myers likely out for season
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Brett Myers will have surgery to repair a torn labrum in his hip and will likely miss the entire season.
Our View: Myers hasn't scheduled a date yet for surgery, but he feels that it is indeed the best option. He could have received a cortisone shot and pitched through it, but that left open the possibility of damaging his arm permanently. Unfortunately for the Phillies, they are now short one starter. They'll likely start scouring the trade market.

Myers, who left Wednesday's start in the sixth inning after his hip kept locking up, said he was surprised when team physican Michael Ciccotti suggested that surgery was the ideal option. "I honestly didn't think I would need surgery," Myers said. "I thought [the exam] would show some inflammation or some slight stuff that would need work, but I could pitch through. But they recommended surgery right after I talked to them." Myers plans to get a second opinion from New York-based hip specialist Bryan Kelly, who performed surgery on Chase Utley's hip in November. Myers said if Kelly recommends surgery, he plans to undergo the operation as soon as possible to improve his chances of pitching before the end of the season.

Myers, who has been on the disabled list just once in his eight-year career, sounded concerned when he first suffered the injury Wednesday, but he never expected one of the first words from team physican Michael Ciccotti's mouth would be that he needed possible season-ending surgery. "I honestly didn't think I would need surgery," Myers said. "I thought it would show some inflammation or some slight stuff that would need work, but I could pitch through. But they recommended surgery right after I talked to them. That was the first thing they told me." Myers could need surgery
Updating a previous report, the MRI on the hip of Brett Myers revealed fraying and possible tearing in the labrum of the hip, according to The News Journal. He will seek a second opinion to decide whether or not he will need surgery.
Our View: This doesn't sound good for Myers, but he wasn't pitching all that well anyway. Surgery looks like a distinct possibility, so fantasy owners may want to have another option in mind. The announcement on his decision should come in the next few days, so stay tuned.

Myers slated for MRI
Brett Myers is slated for an MRI today after exiting Wednesday's start with inflammation in his right hip, according to MLB.com. He said, "It is just like a sharp pain. Our View: Myers is not pitching well right now, and has allowed at least two homers in each of his last three starts. The Phillies will be cautious with the 28-year-old hurler, and we will keep you posted on his status.

It's always nice to get a win, but the story here is Myers' continued losing battle against the longball. After a homer-free contest in his last start on April 29, Myers served up the ninth and tenth dingers -- in just 37 innings -- on the season. The rest of Myers peripheral stats look only slightly higher than usual, but owners have a right to be worried about his tater-related struggles. Status: Out. Return early October?
After meeting Friday with general manager Ruben Amaro Jr., free agent Brett Myers was told that the Phillies will not attempt to re-sign him. Myers spent eight seasons in Philadelphia, going 73-63 with a 4.40 ERA in 1,183 2/3 innings split between the rotation and bullpen. When healthy he's a qualify third or fourth starter and potential late-inning reliever, but injuries and off-field issues no doubt convinced the Phillies to move on.
