Myers, who had served up homers in all four of his previous starts (and eight overall), kept the ball in the yard Wednesday, which was good news. However, between the long balls and a cumulative 26/15 K/BB ratio, Myers clearly still has a lot of work to do before he can be considered a must-start again in mixed leagues. He�s scheduled to the rubber next on May 5 in St. Louis.

Brett Myers got the Opening Day start for the Phillies Sunday due to an injury to Cole Hamels, and he was very un-Hamels-like. Myers allowed four runs on eight hits, including three home runs, over six innings. Fittingly, he took the loss.

Our View: This was Myers' third straight Opening Day start. You'd think the Phillies would have learned by now that you should put a good starter on the mound the first game of the year. If Myers isn't beating his wife or involved in some kind of turmoil, he's giving up home runs.

For the third consecutive season, Brett Myers will be the Phillies' opening day starter, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. "Brett can have any type of year that Brett wants to have," pitching coach Rich Dubee said. "He's in a lot better frame of mind than he was last year."

Our View: Myers has had a fine spring, and if he can maintain his momentum from the end of last season, he could get off to another strong start. Myers' main issue is his consistency, which follows his confidence. He needed work in the minors in 2008 to get in a better frame of mind, but he was excellent once he returned. He is entering the final year of his deal.

Myers held Toronto to one run on three hits in four innings, leading the Phillies to a 9-1 win over the Blue Jays on Tuesday night. He struck out four while walking none. After the game, Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel announced that the 28-year-old right-hander will start the opener. After meeting Friday with general manager Ruben Amaro Jr., free agent Brett Myers was told that the Phillies will not attempt to re-sign him. Myers spent eight seasons in Philadelphia, going 73-63 with a 4.40 ERA in 1,183 2/3 innings split between the rotation and bullpen. When healthy he's a qualify third or fourth starter and potential late-inning reliever, but injuries and off-field issues no doubt convinced the Phillies to move on.
