R.B. Fallstrom, of The Associated Press, reports St. Louis Cardinals 2B Brendan Ryan (ankle) is likely to miss the next few games while the swelling in his ankle goes down. He fouled a pitch off his ankle Thursday, July 30.

The club is still calling his injury a bruise, but it's a nasty bruise and he's got plenty of swelling. He's quite certainly out for the weekend, and the New York series is no guarantee. However, they're not placing him on the disabled list yet. It's hard to envision Ryan even coming off the bench for at least the immediate future. "Lot of pain last night," said manager Tony La Russa. "We'll see how quickly the swelling is reduced. But he's limited. He's not going to play the weekend, and Monday, that's four days there. so we'll see."

Brendan Ryan was seen leaving Busch Stadium on crutches and wearing a protective boot on Thursday night after the Cardinals loss to the Dodgers.

Our View: No word on whether the boot is serious or just a precaution, but the team is calling Ryan day-to-day at this point. While Ryan doesn't provide much fantasy value, he is crucial to the Cardinals' success. He has emerged as one of the better defensive shortstops in the game and everyone in Cardinal Nation is hoping the injury isn't too severe.

According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the Cardinals could activate shortstop Khalil Greene as early as Friday.

Our View: Greene, on the DL with anxiety issues for the second time this season, has been mashing the ball in Triple-A and with Thursday's injury to Brendan Ryan the Cards could get his bat in the lineup. In the last eight games of his rehab stint, Greene is 12-for-30 with four homers and eight RBI.

Cardinals' beat writer Matthew Leach is reporting on his Twitter page that shortstop Brendan Ryan was a late scratch from Saturday's game with "gastrointestinal stress." He was replaced by Tyler Greene in the lineup.

Our View: Not sure exactly what gastrointestinal stress is, but it sounds like Brendan might have had a tummy ache. This shouldn't be too serious, so anyone in NL-only leagues who is using Ryan should have him back soon.
